Pelliccione (left) received the Ronni Reaves Community Service Award for his dedication. U.S. Navy veteran Lawrence Janos, a decorated veteran of the famed D-Day invasion of Europe that turned the tide of World War II, has been awarded the prestigious Legion of Honor medal by the Republic of France. Janos is a resident of Atria Kew Gardens, where he is a leader among a large contingent of veterans, as well as a longtime contributor to life at the community. The award was personally bestowed on Janos by the Ambassador of France to the United States, Monsieur Francois Delattre, on the order of the President of the Republic of France, François Hollande, at a grand ceremony presented by the French Embassy. As a member of the French Legion of Honor, Janos becomes a “Chevalier” (knight). Established in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte, the Legion of Honor, or Légion d’honneur, is France’s highest decoration. As in Janos’ case, it may be awarded to members of the American armed forces “who through their bravery and determination contributed to the liberation of France during the Second World War.” CONGRATULATIONS Sarah Elizabeth Corning, daughter of Lisa and Michael Corning of Brookfield, Connecticut, and Ian Jaryd Perler, son of Michele Beaudoin of Jackson Heights, and Marvyn Perler of Brookfi eld, Connecticut, were wed on October 5 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Sarah is a registered nurse and Ian is a realtor. HONORS & AWARDS At the November 14 meeting of the Jefferson Democratic Club of Northeast Queens, Assemblymember Edward Braunstein presented a proclamation and Senator Tony Avella presented a resolution to Corporal John McHugh, Sr. in honor of his service during World War II. McHugh is a veteran of the Battle of the Bulge and the Battle of Normandy. He is the recipient of the Silver Star for gallantry in action, the Bronze Star for meritorious service, the European Theater of Operations Ribbon, which contains a silver arrowhead for the Normandy invasion, and four Bronze Stars indicating the battles of St. Lo breakthrough, Filet Gap, Hurtgen Forest and Battle of the Bulge. He is also the recipient of two Presidential Unit Citations for Crucifi x Hill and Hurtgen Forest, the Combat Infantry badge, and the Fort Eger badge, given by Belgium for action during the war.
