With fewer than 400 total students in the entire school, Pan American’s mission is to help Hispanic students who have been in the U.S. four years or fewer learn English and obtain a high school diploma while retaining their own cultural heritage. Badia welcomed the students to the school and explained what they needed to do in order to successfully attain a diploma. High school fair drew Hillcrest supporters Hillcrest High School students and their parents participated in the annual Borough High School fair held on Oct. 17 at Francis Lewis High School. Helping students learn English in Cambria Heights Julia Robison recently joined the Math, Science, Research and Technology (MAST) High School in Cambria Heights’ Campus Magnet Complex as an ESL (English as a second language) teacher, the school’s principal, Jose M. Cruz, announced. Robison moved to the U.S. from Russia six years ago and has a master’s degree in linguistics. She also earned a master’s degree in ESL from the City University of New York in June of this year. She will be teaching English to mostly Spanish- and Haitian-Creole-speaking students. Teens campaign for student offi ce in Elmhurst Seniors campaigning for spots on the student council campaigned for votes from their fellow classmates during a recent assembly at the Pan American International High School in Elmhurst. The assembly took place in the gymnasium ahead of the school-wide election. Jessica Delagrange, coordinator of student affairs and a physical education instructor, organized the event. For many of the students, this was their introduction to American-style politics. School Youth Development Coordinator Julia Hitt- Shorter is pictured with 11th-graders from the Cambria Heights school as they prepare for Red Ribbon Week, held from Oct. 23 to 31. Organized by the National Family Partnership, Red Ribbon Week aims to help children grow up safe, healthy and drug free.
