Couple sentenced for housing a huge stash of illegal cigarettes in their Flushing residence A Long Island couple admitted in court this week to smuggling in and storing hundreds of cartons of untaxed cigarettes and scores of counterfeit tax stamps in a Flushing home they owned, prosecutors announced. Ben C. Chen, 42, and Qin F. Liu, 39, of Syosset paid the price for the cache of 375 cartons of untaxed cigarettes and 3,540 individual counterfeit tax stamps that detectives discovered at 136-19 60th Ave. during a raid on March 1, 2016. The court-authorized search of the residence was the result of a long-term investigation by authorities into the illegal distribution and sale of untaxed cigarettes from out-of-state. “Tobacco bootleggers who illegally bring untaxed cigarettes from other locations into New York for resale cheat the public by failing to contribute their fair share to city and state coffers,” said District Attorney Richard A. Brown. “For every dollar or two dollars a store owner or consumer saves by purchasing an untaxed pack of cigarettes, the honest taxpayer becomes the victim by being forced to dip into his or her own pocket to pay hi gher taxes.” In Queens Supreme Court this Tuesday, Sept. 13, Chen pleaded guilty to second-degree attempted criminal possession of a forged instrument — a class E felony — and was sentenced to 1 1/2 to 3 years in prison. Liu pleaded guilty to attempting to evade or defraud a tax on a cigarette or tobacco — also a class E felony — and was sentenced to fi ve years’ probation. She has paid $70,000 in restitution.
