Weeping Beech Park, Bland Playground, Bowne Playground and Maple Playground — area parks with persistent sanitation problems — will be cleared of garbage in a cleanup campaign conducted over the next two weeks by volunteers from local organizations. The initiative began last Saturday, Sept. 17, with volunteers from the First Baptist Church of Flushing youth group. Cleanup equipment for last Saturday’s kickoff efforts were provided by the Department of Sanitation. The cleanup is part of Councilman Peter Koo’s ongoing campaign to keep parks in the Flushing area clean. Koo previously allocated funding to the City Parks Foundation and Green Earth Urban Gardens. “The Parks Department is responsible for cleanup and maintenance of our city’s parks, but they are largely understaffed and Flushing’s parks and playgrounds are routinely filthy only a short time after sanitation crews finish cleaning,” said Koo in a statement Saturday. “Until the city makes this a priority, it’s up to the community to act.
