JOHN’S KICKS OFF CONFERENCE PLAY WITH SCORELESS STALEMATE BY LIAM BAKER editorial@qns.com/@QNS The St. John’s men’s soccer team kicked off BIG EAST conference play with a stalemate against Marquette on Sept. 17 as the two sides battled for 110 scoreless minutes at Valley Fields in Milwaukee. The draw sees the Red Storm move to 3-1-2 on the season, remaining undefeated against unranked opponents, while Marquette — which recorded its third consecutive tie on Saturday — is now 3-1-3 for the year. Sophomore goalkeeper Andrew Withers and junior midfi elder Harry Cooksley were the standout performers for the Johnnies, with the former registering his second straight shutout and the latter creating six chances for the visitors in his 79 minutes of game time. After being outshot 6-1 by the home team in the fi rst half, St. John’s bounced back with a strong second half, recording 10 shots to the Golden Eagles’ six. St. John’s fi rst clear-cut opportunity came in the 56th minute when Cooksley played a cross into the penalty area that bounced around dangerously before being cleared away. The Red Storm came close to breaking the deadlock again in the 59th minute when Cooksley tried to bend a free kick around the wall into the lower right-hand corner only to be denied by Marquette goalie Luis Barraza. Barraza continued to come up big for his team as the game entered its fi nal chapter, making three saves over the fi nal 14 minutes to keep the game level. St. John’s best chance to get ahead came in the fi rst overtime period when sophomore forward Mike Prosuk fi red a chance that was tipped by a defender and sailed just over the crossbar. The Johnnies return to Belson Stadium on Tuesday night, playing host to Quinnipiac at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcasted on ESPN3 and streamed live on the WatchESPN app.
