Hundreds of cavity-fighting dentists gathered in Flushing Meadows Corona Park over the weekend for the World’s Fair of Dentistry. Pegged as the largest dental event ever in Queens, dentists from the tri-state area gathered in the park on Saturday, Sept. 13, and Sunday, Sept. 14, to listen to lectures on topics such as soft tissue management and dental emergencies. The lectures took place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Terrace on the Park, and raffles were held throughout the weekend with gifts like dental equipment and Mercedes vehicles. The event was hosted by the Queens County Dental Society, a member of the American Dental Association. Admission was open to all for $85, but dental students and residents didn’t have to pay anything to attend. “It is incredibly important to have the next generation of dentists involved in organized dentistry as early as possible, so we invited them free of charge,” said Dr. Sudhakar Shetty, president-elect of the Queens County Dental Society. The fair was held last year for the first time, but this year, attendance greatly increased, according to the Queens County Dental Society. There were about 330 people who attended the fair on Saturday and 370 on Sunday. Queens Courier publisher completes ALS Ice Bucket Challenge BY THE QUEENS COURIER STAF editorial@queenscourier.com Victoria Schneps, publisher of The Queens Courier, participated in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge on Sept. 12 at Christie & Co. Salon & Spa, 23-64 Bell Blvd., in Bayside’s Bay Terrace Shopping Center. The weather was warm, but the several gallons of water poured on Schneps’ head were ice cold. Lois Christie, who owns the salon, offered a free blowout to anyone who participated in the challenge, in which people poured freezing water over their heads in the name of fighting the progressive neurodegenerative disease. Those who wish to donate to the ALS Association can do so at http://www.alsa.org/.
