The men’s final came down to an unlikely match-up between No. 10 seed Kei Nishikori of Japan and Croatia’s Marin Cilic, the No. 14 seeded player. Both men had amazing upsets in previous rounds to reach their first Grand Slam final each on Sept. 8 at Arthur Ashe Stadium, but it was Cilic who walked victorious. Cilic dominated Nishikori partly due to his big service game, which included 17 aces, winning the match in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3. “I mean, the key was definitely that I was playing my own game and it was working extremely well,” Cilic said after the match. On the women’s side of the draw, top-ranked Serena Williams defeated No. 10 seeded Caroline Wozniacki to win her 18th Grand Slam on Sept. 7, tying for fourth place on the all-time list with Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova. The win is Williams’ third straight US Open title, and sixth overall, matching Evert’s record. Williams also received a record $4 million payout, the largest ever for any men’s or women’s tennis competition. In the men’s doubles final match, American twins Bob and Mike Bryan defeated Spaniards Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez to win their 100th career title as a team and also their 16th Grand Slam. As is customary during the US Open, more celebrities came out for the final matches, including NBA star Tony Parker, Bill Gates, Bruce Willis, actress Olivia Munn, Michael J. Fox, and race car driver Jeff Gordon. Photos courtesy of Dominick Totino Photography Marin Cilic
