After the previous owner had to declare bankruptcy, Coady took over the space with two other partners: Gary Gullo and Eddie Shapiro. After taking over the business in April, the partners closed the space for two and a half months to completely renovate the space. Now, the SHARPER SKILLS…BETTER GRADES…BRIGHTER FUTURE! SHARPER SKILLS…BETTER GRADES…BRIGHTER FUTURE! restaurant is back, open and eager to serve the community. “It’s really good for everything,” Coady said. “People are comfortable to have a wedding here; they’re comfortable to bring their kids and have a family dinner here, or to bring their girlfriend dressed up. It’s a comfortable space.” The space which holds over 100 people was specifically designed with these accommodations in mind. The restaurant features a pizza-counter area, a dining area with ambient lighting and a full bar. We do outgoing and in-house catering. Our catering space holds over 120 people.”We designed it so that everyone gets what they want,” Coady continued. “We tried to do something that would attract everyone,” added fellow owner Gary Gullo. “Jimmy’s been tweaking the food, and the food is really good.” Blending the cuisines of Italy and New York, the restaurant’s recipes are the result of collaborations between Coady and Harlem-native chef Bruce Cacace. A special source of pride for Coady is the restaurant’s sauces, which are all homemade and assembled in small batches. The restaurant’s marinara sauce features sweet San Marzano tomatoes, ribbons of fresh basil and chunks of roasted garlic. The restaurant’s vodka sauce is a highlight. Carefully made with tomatoes, cream, shallots, onions, reduced vodka and other ingredients, the sauce is far from the standard, large-batch vodka sauces found in a standard local pizzeria. The sauce is put on pasta, as well as their pizza alla vodka, which is also dolloped with locally made, fresh mozzarella. All pizza is cooked within the restaurant’s brick, woodfired IS ONGOING oven. A crowd favorite, the “Staiano” entree, breaded and pan-fried chicken or veal with prosciutto, mushrooms and fresh mozzarella, is also served with another homemade sauce: a complex and unique red Marsala wine sauce. Crowd favorites also include the Angus Burger, the Chicken Scarpariello and Cascarino’s Paella, served with mussels, clams, shrimp, scallops, calamari, lobster, hot sausage, chicken and saffron rice in a garlic sauce, according to Coady. “Our goal is to provide people with a cool-looking, hip kind of place to hang out for anybody and everybody, with quality food and great service,” Gullo said. “We’ve got three new owners here that are really looking to make an impression on College Point and let them know that things aren’t the way they used to be. It’s definitely a step up and worth coming in to check out.
