New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristoff wrote a brilliant column Sunday about this historic event: “When women win, men win, too.” He said something that I truly believe: “To those who worry … I’d say not only is this inevitable, not only is it a matter of fairness, but the evidence is also overwhelming that when women gain power and a seat at the table, we men benefit as well. So let’s relax and join the celebration.” I cried over Hillary’s nomination, as did so many of my female friends who felt the power of that moment. City Councilwoman Karen Koslowitz was privileged to be present on the convention floor for the vote that made Clinton’s nomination official. On her Facebook page, Koslowitz wrote, “Tears were shed … and I was so proud of my party to nominate the first woman” to be a presidential nominee for a major political party in American history. I cried again when I saw the pride on Bill Clinton’s now thin face. They have had a turbulent marriage, but the joy on his face was as brilliant as the sun in the sky. How I miss that kind of look I had gotten from my beloved late husband, Stu. It was an extraordinary moment. Everyone overwhelmingly recognized Hillary as the game changer for our country, but also recognized that the years of anti-Hillary rhetoric affected their feelings about her. I was shocked that a woman who is a well connected political mother even commented that “Hillary shouldn’t shout when she speaks!” I listened to her acceptance speech and felt the power of her words but others perceived it as shouting. There is the difference of perception. With all the challenges we face today, change is coming on many levels. In my small world we recognize we must change, and so you can read our 20 newspapers in print, online, on your phone or on your computer. I believe you must grow and change with the times. It will be fascinating to see if our country will accept the change of having a woman lead our nation. Please send me your comments and feelings about the election. This election has electrified the community and everyone is talking about it. Now everyone must be registered to vote and then get to the polls on Nov. 8. If you’re not registered to vote, do so now! Our newspapers will lead you to the link to register. If you moved, make sure you have changed your address. Visit www.vote.nyc.ny.us for additional information. Use your power! Please vote this November! It was 25 years ago that Joe and Mary Ann Mattone married and together helped to change the face of our city with their generosity of heart and philanthropy. They stand together as models of success and the sharing of it with countless organizations small and large and people in need. I feel and see their boundless kindness. To celebrate their landmark anniversary, they renewed their wedding vows with Monsignor David Cassata and Monsignor Jamie Gigantiello leading the ceremony. With a big welcoming hug, I reunited last week with my friend from China, Wenzhi Zhang, who donated dozens of unique sculptures to the art gallery at Queensborough Community College. She brought three new ones from China on this visit and they are show stoppers. The wonderful pieces are there for everyone to enjoy in the tranquil garden of the innovative art gallery. Queensborough President Diane Bova Call welcomed our friend, speaking of the talented artist’s many gifts for the campus. Many people are so grateful to her for enhancing the CUNY campus. I had the pleasure of visiting Wendi’s studio on the banks of a river outside Guangzheng. She is a prolific artist working in sculptures, paintings, furniture, scarves (I wore her design the day of the dedication) and enameled bracelets. Her talent is boundless! tweet me @vschneps A moment in history The Mattones on their wedding day, and today, 25 years later as they renew their vows
