FOR BREAKING NEWS VISIT www.qns.com AUGUST 4, 2016 • The Queens Courier 25 SCOTT BARON’S STAR OF QUEENS Robert Salant Public Relations Flushing House Previous Role Salant worked in public relations for Flushing House for 17 years, a large chunk of his 30 years of PR experience. With Flushing House, he contacted editors and reporters of publications to pitch stories and write press releases. He also talked to them about placing ads in the newspapers, production and distribution of printed media such as brochures, flyers and newspapers. Along with contacting publications, he also contributed as the FlushingHouse. com website writer and editor. He retired at the end of star OF queens July and has been asked to stay on as a consultant until Se ptember. C o m m uni t y Involvement As a member of the board of directors and the council of the Queens Interagency Council on Aging (QICA), it’s obvious that Salant cares for the elderly. QICA is the only boroughwide advocacy organization that represents hundreds of senior-related services in the borough. They hold dozens of meetings a year and receive input from the senior community and from organizations on what seniors need whether it’s transportation, housing, transportation, health care, etc. Life After Retirement Besides going to the gym, Salant still wants to get work done in his retirement. He’s going to continue working on the QICA board, and he also wants to do some freelance PR work. Salant also said he wants to go on more vacations with his wife and enjoy his retirement. Inspirations Salant’s love for the grandparents and older members of his family, and the fact that he misses them, led him to pursue his career at Flushing House. He and his family used to take holiday vacations to the Catskills, with grandparents, uncles, cousins, etc. He used to see them every summer, then it seemed he would only see them at weddings. Eventually, it transitio ned to only seeing the extended family that he held dear at funerals. Challenges The biggest challenge of working at Flushing House was losing the people that Salant grew to like. Of course, it came with the territory of working at a home for the elderly, but Salant says that it almost causes yo u to build an emotional wall to block out the great sense of loss. Favorite Memories Salant’s favorite memory is from the first year he started working at Flushing House in 1999. Besides working with media relations and public relations, his bosses wanted him to build up the annual gala. When trying to figure out how to do this, Salant discovered that a woman named Rose Kryzak was a resident at the home who spearheaded the EPIC (Elderly Pharmaceutical Insurance Coverage) Bill, which makes prescription drugs much cheaper and more available for the elderly. She died in 1999, paving the way for Salant to introduce the annual “Rose Kryzak Award” to be given out at the Gala to an elderly person who embodied Kryzak’s character. Every year, Kryzak’s family goes up on stage and gives the award to the recipient. brought to you by SCOTT BARON & ASSOCIATES, P.C.
