Entitled “A Salute to the Tonys” the two-act musical production delivers songs and choreography from some of the most memorable, awardwinning Broadway shows. In her directorial debut, Cathy Chimenti offers dozens of fresh faces along with popular veterans. Also joining the project are husband Michael and daughter Juliana. Both boast impressive stage credits. Choreographer/co-playwright Jenifer Badamo provides her signature upbeat, always clever staging. The performance begins with a live violinist and Tevye from “Fiddler on the Roof,” played by Michael Beaury. He shares his musical story as he walks through the audience. The entire company joins him for “Tradition.” The next nostalgic entry is from “Guys and Dolls.” The harmonic “round” is well done by Frank DiSpigno, Rob Gold and Gary Tifeld. Narrator Jason Wieder sets the scene. The show progresses with different narrators introducing a variety of dramatic and comedic entries. The extensive costuming (Chery Manniello) is amazing. Meanwhile, tireless musical director Andrew Dublin and the band don’t miss a beat. Producers Barbara Koenig, Eli Koenig and Martha Stein have helped bring a new wave of talent to Theatre by the Bay. Many family members, always welcomed, are making their debut. That includes Debbie and Jenna Barbieri, Renee and Ken Cohn, among others. A large group of young performers from junior high through recent college graduates participate in the musical vignettes. Nods to Ryan Backer, Rebecca Cushman, Celeste Gaetano, Karen Kessler, Andrew McClusky, Ryan O’Connor, Jason Wieder and Peter David Zhong. The audience is treated to several solos, duets and tonguein cheek trios. Sue Fiebert, Fern Nash, Phoenix Gray, Patrice Williams and others are noteworthy. A very funny “Ya Gotta Get a Gimmick” stars Jean Ann Kump, Fran Geier, Sharon DeCoursey and Jenna in their tribute to Gypsy Rose Lee. Jack Holly and Renee Colavito show their professional prowess in separate stagings throughout the show. Kudos as well to Olivia Klansky, Lee Newman, Veronica Picone, Patty Valenti and Rosemarie Bandin Werner. Clearly the Chimenti family and Jenifer Badamo have added another gem to their theatrical crown as pre-eminent performance leaders in our area.
