36 The QUEE NS Courier • wellness • july 21, 2016 for breaking news visit www.qns.com WELLNESS s LIJ Forest Hills – Northwell Health welcomes Susan Browning as executive director By Emily Davenport edavenport@qns.com @EmSlapstheBass Last year, Long Island Jewish Forest Hills – Northwell Health welcomed Susan Browning as the new executive but overall in this position she oversees strategic development and operations of the hospital, including clinic quality, patient experience and financial performance. “I went to a liberal arts college and fell in love in science,” said Browning, who received her Bachelor of Arts in biology from Barnard College at Columbia University. “I worked part time at Mount Sinai and met some administrators, and that’s where I made the decision to go into health policy and management.” Browning went on to receive her master’s degree in public health in health policy and management from the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health and has remained active at Columbia for many years, including teaching hospital operations on a graduate level. Browning is no stranger to running a hospital. Her experience in hospital administration runs throughout the boroughs. Prior to joining Northwell Health, Browning served as a vice president of administration at New York Methodist Hospital. During her time at Long Island Jewish Forest Hills – Northwell Health, Browning has been overseeing the many changes that are happening at the hospital, from construction to the building as well as bringing on new staff and technologies to their subspecialties. “I’m most excited about setting our course on a strategic course to access to more sophisticated services to the local community,” Browning said when asked about what changes she is looking forward to seeing for the future at Long Island Jewish Forest Hills – Northwell Health. Outside of the hospital, Browning has ongoing engagement in the Queens community. Having been raised in Woodside, Browning married her husband (also a Queens native) at The Church-in-the-Gardens in Forest Hills. On Jan. 1, 2016, Browning joined the board of directors of the Queens Museum. Because of her personal history and connections in Queens, Browning is happy to be a part in helping improve the hospital. “The opportunity to bring the hospital to the next level is very personal because of the commitment I have to the community,” said Browning, who still has many connections to Queens through her friends and family. Outside of Queens, Browning served as a member of the executive committee of the board of directors of the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce from 2006-2012. She had served on the committee as secretary, vice chairman and ultimately chair-elect. Browning was also a founding board member of Camp Good Grief in Staten Island, a weekend camp that helps children who recently lost a family member learn how to express the grief from the loss in a healthy way.
