Achilles, an organization whose goal it is to “bring hope, inspiration, and the joys of achievement to all,” holds the 4-mile race each year. In the past, Achilles members who live in Queens had to go all the way to Manhattan whenever they wanted to train for the event. But disabled athletes did not have to make that trek to train for this year’s big race. Wendy Phaff, an avid runner, founded a Queens chapter of Achilles International in January 2016 to get those who may not have been so keen on leaving the house to exercise beforehand to challenge themselves and meet new friends in the process. “I have come to know, respect and adore these amazing athletes who are helping me to make the Queens chapter strong. I have met remarkable athletes and guides who take time from their training schedules and lives to be there to make sure that our members have company along this journey,” Phaff said. Runner Jenny Hwang lives in Whitestone. Her experience with Achilles shows the impact it can have on an athlete’s life. “I never thought I would be able to run a mile,” Hwang said. “Also, it challenges me to do my best. Until I came to Achilles, I wasn’t very social. Achilles has given me a chance to meet friends and be more outgoing. I’m always looking forward to go running with Achilles.” THE ART OF ELDER LAW For more than 30 years the elder law firm of Ronald Fatoullah & Associates has been providing New Yorkers with legal solutions that protect, relieve and endure for generations.
