58 THE QUEENS COURIER • MEMORIAL DAY • MAY 21, 2015 FOR BREAKING NEWS VISIT www.queenscourier.com memorial day Adventureland braces for summer of ‘Turbulence’ BY THE QUEENS COURIER STAFF [email protected]/@QueensCourier Just in time for the unoffi cial start of summer, Long Island’s Adventureland will unveil its brand new Turbulence roller coaster on Friday, May 22. The new thrill ride is the latest improvement at the Farmingdale attraction that has drawn generations of Queens and Long Island residents since it opened in 1962. Turbulence’s maiden voyage will take place following a special ribbon-cutting ceremony on the afternoon of May 22. The ride’s fi rst passengers are the winners of the park’s “First Ride for a Cause” contest and an auction hosted by Cox Media and Adventureland’s Helping Hands Foundation. Seats on the fi rst ride were raffl ed off with proceeds donated to the Long Island Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and the Nassau Suffolk Services for Autism. Replacing the park’s previous marquee coaster, Hurricane, Turbulence features two trains with free-spinning cars, meaning that riders will get to experience unique twists and turns every trip. Workers spent two months during Adventureland’s offseason to build the new coaster, designed by German coaster manufacturer Mack Rides. It’s the tallest and fastest roller coaster in Adventureland’s history, but it also fi ts the mid-sized amusement park’s family-friendly nature, as children as small as 44 inches tall will be permitted to ride with an adult. Adventureland is located at 2245 Broadhollow Rd. (Route 110) in Farmingdale. For more information or to purchase season passes, call 631-694-6868 or visit www. adventureland.us. Summer nights of jazz on Flushing House roof BY THE QUEENS COURIER STAFF [email protected] @QueensCourier Live jazz will fi ll the summer skies over Flushing on Friday, June 19, as a group of talented artists bring their love and concern for the elderly to new heights on the Flushing House rooftop. “Jazz Up in the Sky” takes place at the top of Flushing House, New York State’s largest not-for-profi t, independent living retirement community. This is its second fundraiser featuring three live jazz quartets, and all proceeds benefi t the not-for-profi t Flushing House endowment fund. Headlining the evening’s entertainment is world-famous singer Deborah Davis and A Few Good Men. This international jazz vocalist has appeared with jazz legends such as Ray Brown and Lionel Hampton. In 2004, Davis and her band represented the U.S. as jazz ambassadors to Latin America. A former member of The Shirells, she’s jammed with Bon Jovi and Billy Joel and opened for Diana Ross, Celine Dion, Eric Clapton, Alicia Keys and more. The festival also features music by two other popular local jazz quartets: Christi Gehrisch heads up The Lowdown Stompers, specializing in music of the 1920s, ‘30s and ‘40s, including New Orleans jazz, swing, and the American Songbook; Steve Peppas heads up The Luck Tones, four local seniors who play jazz standards plus classical jazz. The festival includes a gourmet feast, wine and beer, all served on the Flushing House rooftop, with a dance fl oor that boasts spectacular views of New York’s panoramic skyline. Also featured is an art show and sale, with original creations donated by Flushing House supporters. For a few bucks more, fans can purchase one-of-a-kind artwork at very reasonable prices.
