SPG15MB2 50646 Local Students Revel in Unforgettable Experience A premier opportunity for New York City high school students, Plaza College teamed up with two Queens high schools this past semester to launch their Medical Scholars Program. This successful program was introduced so those interested in a career in healthcare may earn college credits through Plaza’s School of Allied Health before they even graduate from high school. Participating juniors and seniors enjoy access to individualized student services, the expertise of seasoned professors whom are active in the medical field, and the newest college campus in NYC. Depending upon continued participation, Medical Scholars participants may earn up to 12 college credits by the time they graduate. In January 2015, Plaza welcomed its first class of Medical Scholars – 65 students from the Academy of Medical Technology in Far Rockaway and Thomas A. Edison CTE High School in Jamaica. These students took part in a Human Anatomy & Physiology or Developmental Psychology course in addition to many exciting academic activities and extracurricular events. “Working with the students from AMT and Thomas Edison was a truly special experience,” explained Plaza College COO, Chad Callahan. “They flourished and they really excelled both in and out of the classroom. This was an exceptionally gifted group of students with bright futures ahead of them.” To commemorate the end of a successful semester, Plaza College celebrated the achievements of the first Medical Scholars class with an awards ceremony on Friday, May 8th. Students and their families gathered in the Plaza Commons where each participating scholar received a certificate of achievement and select students were presented with Special Achievement, Collegiate Spirit, Professionalism, Outstanding Academic Achievement, and Rising Star awards. Somaya, a current junior at one of the participating schools, described her experience as “unforgettable.” Further, she said, “I’d like to come back in the fall and take another course. I had a really good time at Plaza College. I would love to come back again!” In addition to many returning students from AMT and Thomas Edison, Plaza is excited to be welcoming students from Forest Hills High School in September. High School Administrators interested in learning more about how to qualify their students to participate in the Plaza College Medical Scholars Program should contact Chad Callahan, Chief Operating Officer at 718-779-1430.
