SUNDAY, MAY 8 The Queens Museum invites you to an offsite event exploring the musical tradition of Egypt and Syria this Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. The event is an interactive workshop where all are welcomed to participate regardless of musical skill level. Workshop instructor Sami Abu Shamays employs a range of simple call-and-response techniques in his instruction that enables even the most rhythmless to follow along. Admission is free but registration is required, which may be done by contacting Guido Garaycochea at ggaraycochea@queensmuseum.org. This event will be held offsite at Immigrant Movement International which is located at 108-59 Roosevelt Ave. in Flushing. Celebrate female composers this Sunday at the Queens Museum during Mothers of Music, a concert by the Dream Unfi nished Collective. The collective is a diverse group of classical musicians and activists who promote and celebrate NYC-based civil rights and community organizations, as well as individual women, through concerts and presentations. The concert will feature music from female African American composers like Zenobia Powell Perry and Florence Price and is expected to go from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. The Queens Museum can be found in the New York City Building of Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Corona. The Queens International 2016 Exhibition will be at the Queens Museum this Sunday from 2 to 4:30 p.m. to showcase performances from Melanie McLain and Xiaoshi Vivian Vivian Qin. The exhibition is free with general admission to the museum and the Queens Museum can be found in the New York City Building of Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Corona. The New York Hall of Science invites you and your little ones to this edition of Science in the Park where the featured theme will be water. This afternoon of free, science-oriented activities will be held at Alley Pond Park in Little Neck and offers your child the opportunity to learn about all sorts of natural phenomena through fun crafts and activities like designing your own fl ink, water-strider making, bubble art and penny-boats. Pre-registration is required for all events. Alley Pond Park is in Little Neck Bay. MONDAY, MAY 9 Think you’ve got a great idea for a business but not quite sure how to get the ball rolling? Drop by Queens Borough Hall this Monday from 6 to 7 p.m. for Queens Borough President Melinda Katz and QEDC’s New Idea to New Venture class, which will give you an overview of what exactly is the next step and what resources are available with topics such as registering your business, choosing a business name and making sure your business is ready to launch. Come join the Queens Library at Long Island City for the fi rst session of its Green Design Lab, a 10-week STEM program for teens. Every week participants will complete new projects related to energy including building solar cars, designing wind turbine blades, and creating 3D models of sustainable communities. The Queens Public Library is hosting a free resume building and job seeking workshop for teens and young adults this Monday from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Central Library. This no-registration event will equip with a professional resume highlighting your best attributes and achievements. There will also be job-seeking support offered to every attendee who completes a resume at the workshop. The Central Library is located at 89-11 Merrick Blvd. in Jamaica. The Flushing branch of the Queens Public Library will be hosting a video game design workshop called RoboFun this Monday from 4 to 5:30 p.m. This workshop is a great opportunity for sixth- through eighth-graders who are interested in pursuing a STEM-related fi eld to gain exposure to programming from an early age. TUESDAY, MAY 10 The Queens Library for Teens invites all interested teens to an open discussion concerning an array of current social issues. WEDNESDAY, MAY 11 The very fi rst annual Guyana Independence Celebration Day will be at Queens Borough Hall this Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. The ceremony is free and will be jointly hosted by Queens Borough President Melinda Katz and the Guyana Independence Committee. The opening reception for the Queens Borough Student Art Festival will be at the Queens Museum this Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. The festival will be hosted by the New York City Department of Education and will showcase works from students in Districts 24-30 and 75. Some of this year’s participating partners include Fidelis Care, Pearle Vision, Bike New York and Addabo Family Health Center. All children must be accompanied by an adult. EDITOR’S PICK The Fresh Meadows branch of the Queens Public Library is opening their doors for all interested kids and teens to come and play Wii and socialize with friends and classmates.
