Originally from Greece, Mouzourou moved to New York City as a young adult to study psychology and sociology. After receiving a master’s degree in mental health counseling psychology, she began work in clinical therapy; however, she found herself dissatisfied with the traditional approach to achieving well-being. “I had observed how the body was not so included in the equation,” Mouzourou said. “So I realized that I wanted to be in the business of wellness and create a healing center that BUSINESS in the NEWS involves everything — all of the aspects of working with people: physical, mental and emotional.” By including meditation and movement to wellness exercises, Mouzourou believes a fuller overall vigor is attainable. “After my graduation, I was very drawn into the healing world,” she noted. “Into how a human being is a whole — not only just the mind, not just talk therapy — but also including the body.” Through a rotating staff of eight to 10 certified instructors and specialized practitioners, the Anthea Healing Center offers daily yoga classes in a variety of styles, including restorative, yin, power and vinyasa. “What is different with us is that we embrace yoga from the healing aspect,” Mouzourou said. “For yoga not to be competitive, or a sport — of course it’s stretching and it’s good for the body and you sweat, and it sculpts the body — but yoga for the soul.” Additionally, the Anthea Center offers Restorative and Reiki Healing workshops, massage sessions and psychotherapy. The Center also boasts an outdoor rooftop space which features scheduled patio yoga classes and is also available to be rented out for special events. “Because we live in a busy city — everybody works so hard, there is anxiety, we commute so long in the trains — we come home and we just want to rest and relax the mind,” Mouzourou said. “So this is what we target here: yoga for peace, for mind and for balance.” Anthea Yoga is located at 34-01 45th St., Astoria, and is open seven days a week. A full schedule of classes and events can be found at antheayoga. com and staff can be reached at 718-606-0049.
