Director of Student Activities York College Dr. Jean Phelps is an administrator at York College of the City University of New York, where she has worked since 1986. She is currently the director of the Offi ce of Student Activities, having held this position since 2005. In her capacity as the director of the Women’s Center from 1998 to 2005, she established active partnerships with the Center for Children and Families, Association of Children’s Services Forum on Foster Parents, Mentoring USA, Quality Education for Minorities Network, Mt. Sinai Sexual Assault Volunteer Initiative, Jamaica Father’s Project and more. She was an instructor/counselor at the York College Community Learning Center, where she taught adult basic education with heavy emphasis on parenting, literacy, writing, and arithmetic skills. Dr. Phelps is an advocate and activist. For six years, she served as the president of the NAACP Jamaica Branch. Dr. Phelps is a member of the Greater Queens Chapter of The Links, Inc. and Epsilon Pi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She is the New York State Committeewoman for the 32nd Assembly District and a vice president of the Guy R. Brewer United Democratic Club. She is the advisor to the Mahogany Sisters Network, an African-American breast cancer survivors support group, and is an honorary board member of Redeemed Outreach Ministries. She is also a board member of Queens Sickle Cell Advocacy Network. Dr. Phelps received a bachelor of science degree in information systems management from York College, a master of arts in urban studies from Queens College and a Ph.D. in sociology from the CUNY Graduate Center. She also studied at the University of Paris, France. In 1986, she was listed in Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. In 2005, she was listed in Who’s Who Among Teachers in American Universities and Colleges. DR. SHERONE SMITH SANCHEZ Assistant Commissioner Program Development, Division of Child Care & Head Start Administration for Children’s Services Sherone Smith-Sanchez, Ed.D, MA, MSc, BFA is an Assistant Commissioner with NYC. She is also a minister at Church of the Harvest in Elmont and has served as an adjunct professor with CUNY. Dr. Smith-Sanchez received both a doctorate and MA from T.C. Columbia University; an MSC from Bank Street College; and a BFA from Parsons. Among the awards she received are: Pro Active Woman 2008: Leadership from the Heart. Pro-Active Women Magazine; Certifi cate of Outstanding Professionalism, 2003, NYC, ACS; Excellence Award, The Children’s Aid Society, 1998. Also an author, her greatest passion is her family of fi ve children and her husband and ministry partner of 23 years, Eduardo. OSANNA OSANNA OVSEPIAN Manager OKG Family Jewelry The manager of OKG Family Jewelry, Osanna Ovsepian has spent the last 20 years perfecting her business. Born in Yerevan, Armenia on October 26, 1971, she grew up with her parents and brother. After graduating high school she moved to New York City with her family. She attended SES Business Institute then worked at TCBC Computer Mechanics for three years. While attending St. Johns University, her father opened OKG Jewelry store in Little Neck, where Osanna started working. By taking GIA Diamond Education courses and other marketing courses she made the business get stronger. Ovsepian married in 1994 and worked to support her husband while he fi nished his residency and fellowship. During this time she was balancing her career, supporting her husband and raising her children. Ovsepian gets involved in designing, buying, selling, bookkeeping and advertising at OKG. Through patience, determination, and a love for the craft she has turned OKG into a thriving business.
