56 THE QUEENS COURIER • BUZZ • FEBRUARY 2, 2017 FOR BREAKING NEWS VISIT WWW.QNS.COM buzz Bayside students learn about Lunar New Year Photos by Suzanne Monteverdi/QNS Museum’s ‘Spooktacular’ is spectacular BY VICTORIA SCHNEPS For several years, the Queens Museum has invited the community to its Spooktacular, a belated celebration of Halloween but done as only the museum can. Hundreds of residents of our diverse borough took part in it. I brought my grandchildren Addy and Jonah to the spectacular Spooktacular and they loved every minute. I also snuck in taking them to see my favorite Tiff any collection and, of course, the powerful unique Panorama off ering a view of every building in New York City built to perfect scale. But back to the aft ernoon that was a work of art in itself. Th ere were activities Greg Corbino dancing with the children The kids enjoyed the Spooktacular at the Queens Museum with a theme for each borough: Quaking Queens photo booth where my kids held up “the world” for the camera, Bewitched Brooklyn ball toss, Menacing Manhattan skyscraper tightrope, Supernatural Staten Island ghost ferry, Bone-Rattling Bronx freaky feather balance. Jonah spend half an hour balancing his feather! Addy fearlessly walked the tightrope between the skyscrapers. But they were both mesmerized by Greg Corbino who entertained and created all the remarkable “sets” for the event. His team featured the talented Circus Amok band and the savvy Soul Line Dancers. It was a unique aft ernoon that I know my kids will cherish forever. Th anks, Queens Museum! BY SUZANNE MONTEVERDI smonteverdi@qns.com @smont76 Students at a school in Bayside learned all about a traditional Asian holiday at an exciting assembly this week. On Tuesday, Jan. 24, the Wan Chi Ming Hung Gar Institute Dragon and Lion Dance Team performed an educational assembly for the student body at P.S. 159 about Lunar New Year — the traditional Asian holiday celebrating the birth of a new year. Students were enthralled as the troupe began an energetic lion dance and high pole performance accompanied by thunderous drum music. Th roughout the presentation, organizer Warren Wan provided narrative support, teaching students about the rich tradition and history behind the important holiday. Later, excitement fi lled the air as the pair of colorful and energetic lions walked around the assembly space collecting red and green envelopes from eager children’s hands — a symbol of good luck and fortune. “Fift y-seven percent of our students population comes from an Asian culture, so the majority of our students do know about the holiday,” school principal Paul DiDio said. “But we’re hoping to educate the other part of our student body, so they can learn more about their classmates and the celebrations they participate in.” DiDio explained that the event was funded by donations from parents and organized by the Parent Teacher Association’s (PTA) executive board. “Th is is our second annual Lunar New Year celebration, and we wanted to do a daytime assembly so that all 680 students could have an experience to remember,” said Teresa Kirchhofer, treasurer of the PTA. “I think having an interactive assembly is something much better than, maybe, having students read a paper on it.” P.S. 159 is a National Blue Ribbon elementary school located at 205-01 33rd Ave.
