Offi cers within the precinct’s Crime Prevention Unit are working to educate residents in Bayside, Douglaston and Little Neck about thieves targeting vehicles in the area hoping to fi nd and steal items inside. According to police, most thieves break into cars because they can see something they want through windows. Residents are urged not to leave valuables in their cars — including pocketbooks, shopping bags, wallet s, luggage, phones, laptops, CDs, cameras or GPS devices. If you must leave these valuables in the vehicle, cops said, do not leave them where they can be seen. Offi cers also urge residents to conceal these items before arriving to your destination, as a thief may be on the lookout. Cops also remind car owners to always lock their car doors, which deters perpetrators. Any suspicious activity or individuals should always be reported to 911. Car break-ins have been an on-going topic of concern for the 111th Precinct recently. Th e precinct’s commanding offi - cer, Deputy Inspector William McBride, attended the November Community Board 11 meeting to inform residents on how best to protect themselves from falling victim to the crime. Members of the 111th Precinct continue to distribute fl yers to members of the community and speak at community meetings about the area crime trend.
