“FLORENCE ADLER SWIMS
FOREVER”
“Florence Adler Swims
Forever” by Rachel Beanland
begins with a shocking trag-edy
that results in three gen-erations
of the Adler family
grappling with heartbreak,
romance, and the weight of
family secrets over the course
of one summer in Atlantic City,
1934.
Migdal Chapter of Hadassah
News and Updates
The essence of the story is
about that secret: A daughter,
Florence, has died in a trag-ic
drowning and the family
is determined not to tell her
sister, Fannie, who is preg-nant.
“We can’t tell Fannie,”
Beanland writes. “Not when
the pregnancy is already so
precarious.”
The New York Times wrote,
“The situation she describes is
poignant and the characters
she develops win us over with
their private grief. Beanland
is particularly good at con-juring
1930s Atlantic City,
with its small family-owned
hotels yielding to larger, more
commercial palaces. The his-torical
moment is fraught as
American Jews try to save
relatives in an increasingly
untenable Nazi Germany.”
“Florence Adler Swims
Forever” was selected as
a New York Times Book
Review Editors’ Choice, one
of USA TODAY’s “Best Books
of 2020” and the winner of the
2020 National Jewish Book
Award for Debut Fiction,
among other accolades.
The book is available on
Amazon for $11.88 in paper-back
or $12.99 on Kindle.
“’ILLEGAL’ JEWS PART THE SEAS”
995 PROGRAM WAS A GREAT
SUCCESS!
BY DEE-DEE GOIDEL
Friends and neighbors
throughout North Shore
Towers have commented that
the recent program featuring
Ruth Zuckerbrod discussing
the book, “’Illegal’ Jews Part the
Seas.” Written by Ruth’s father,
Samuel Isban, the book was
recently translated from Yiddish
into English.
The program aired on
Channel 995 in November
and those who watched it were
impressed by Ruth’s poised and
candid answers to questions
about various chapters of the
book and the author’s back-ground.
Many viewers went on
to say that the presentation was
both absorbing and emotional-ly
moving.
It was interesting to note that
many residents purchased the
book before the presentation
and several were anxious to
read it fully after they saw the
program. Many who bought the
book did so because others had
told them that they could not
put the book down, it was such
a page turner.
BOOK SALES WERE
DONATED TO HADASSAH
The payment for the book was
a donation of $20 to Hadassah,
the same price as on Amazon.
Migdal was able to sell the books
for a donation because of Ruth
and Jerry Zuckerbrod’s gener-osity
in contributing an ample
supply of books to the Migdal
Chapter.
As you can see, the written lega-cy
of Samuel Isban’s courage and
commitment still lives on: When
Samuel was young, he helped to
pave the streets of a future coun-try,
Israel, and now his book has
raised money for Hadassah med-ical
breakthrough research that
“Heals the World,”-- Tikun Olam.”
A special thank you to everyone
who purchased the book. Your
donations will help ongoing
medical research.
HADASSAH DONATIONS
AT WORK
At the beginning
of the “’Illegal’ Jews
Part the Seas” pro-gram
on Channel 995,
Eva Kessner, leader
of Migdal Chapter
of NST, spoke about
Hadassah Medical
Research. When she
focused on Breast
Cancer detection, she
informed those res-idents
watching the
presentation that the Hadassah Organization
has celebrated the 20th year since their
Researchers discovered that the BRCA-
1 gene mutation carried a Breast Cancer
risk. The risk is one-in-forty for Ashkenazi
women compared to one-in-one hundred
for the rest of the population. Following
their discovery, the Hadassah Medical
Organization developed a simple blood test
to detect the BRCA Genes Risk.
One of the leaders in the fight against
breast cancer is Dr. Tamar Yablonski-Peretz,
the daughter of a Holocaust survivor. She is
the Director of Hadassah Medical Center’s
Sharett Institute of Oncology in Israel.
Hadassah’s findings have had a major impact
on breast cancer management, according to
Dr. Yablonski. “We now know this mutation in
the BRCA Gene predisposes the development,”
she said, “not only of breast cancer but also
the development of ovarian, colon, pancreatic
and prostate in males.”
While detecting breast cancer early is part
of the battle against the disease, new research
shows that other genes should not be ignored.
Hadassah Researches, at present know there
are at least twenty-six genes that are involved in
the predisposition of Breast Cancer. This is an
excellent example of your Hadassah donations
at work!
