Last month, Upstanders part-nered
with Mom’s Love, a women’s
empowerment group, for a toy and
coat drive sponsored by P.S. 176 in
Cambria Heights. The items are for
children who are homeless or are
living in Shelters. Carol Meyerson
sent out a quick email to our mem-bers
and they responded by bringing
donations to designated apartments
in each building. The response was
so successful that Mom’s Love had
to schedule a second date for pickup
and were kind enough to send us the
following thank-you note:
Hello to the Upstanders,
We ask for donations of toys and
slightly worn coats, and the Upstanders
delivered big. So from Mom's Love Inc.
we send hugs and thank you's for a
job well done. We appreciate all that
you do and the children and families
that will receive these items appreciate
your kindness and donations as well.

Upstanders Learn About the
Safe Center of Long Island

At our November meeting, we
were fortunate to have as our guest
speaker Lorraine DiFiglia, Safe Center
Director of Education, who discussed
the unique and myriad services the
Safe Center provides to victims of
domestic abuse, domestic assault,
human trafficking, and child and
elder abuse. Domestic abuse is more
prevalent than many of us realize. It
has no limits--rich or poor, educat-ed
or not, sexual orientation, old or
young--anyone can become a victim.
Free services offered by the Center
include mental health counseling,
advocacy, legal consultation and
transitional housing. Patterns of abu-sive
behavior affect the whole family,
including pets, and all are entitled to
services. What makes the Center so
special is that all services are provided
under one roof. In addition to their
professional staff, they have a pedi-atrician,
an assistant district attorney
and police on site. Notably, the Safe
Center operates
the only safe
home in Nassau
County at an
u n d i s c l o s e d
location.
Perhaps most
importantly, they
offer a hotline, answered by real live
people 24/7, not only for immediate
help but also to provide important
information to those struggling with
an abusive situation. The Center’s
hotline is 516-542-0404.

12 Noon until 1:30 pm Upstanders
will be collecting donations in the
lobby of each building to support
the extraordinary work of Safe
Center of LI. Your contribution
will help to give victims of abuse
hope for a better future.

Dr. Amy Braksmajer, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of
Sociology at the SUNY Genesco. She is a graduate of
SUNY Binghamton and holds a Master’s in Public Health
from Columbia University and a Ph.D. in Sociology from
Stony Brook.
A frequent writer for professional journals on the
topic of gender issues, Upstanders members will hear
Dr. Braksmajer speak on January 20 on “How to Use
