The Art Show at the Park Avenue Armory

There are many handsome buildings scat-tered
around the city and perhaps my fa-vorite
is the Park Avenue Armory, located
at 643 Park Avenue. The building is a brick and
stone structure built in l880 in the Gothic Reviv-al
style by architect Charles Clinton. Though it is
no longer home to the National Guard, it is today
where a variety of cultural as well as visual and
performing arts events take place. It is a dynamic
alternative art space for large scale productions,
smaller performances, talks and symposiums.
It was the perfect venue for The Art Show, the
annual exhibition by the Art Dealers Association
of America. It is the nation’s most respected and
longest running art fair. Seventy-two dealers
showed off their works at last month’s exhibit,
including a Matisse drawing and a painting by
Rudolph Stingel which will be sold at auction
in the near future.
On display were several colorful oils by Kenny
Scharf, a cast cement sculpture by Jean Arp,
several pieces by Larry Poons and watercolors
on paper byXui Solar. There were two etchings
by Albrecht Durer as well as one by Rembrandt
which was from the David Tunick Gallery.
Several pieces from the Gottfried Helnwein
in San Francisco depicting the disasters of war
were chilling and the colorful Beauford Delaney

portraits were glowing and can be found at the
Michael Rosenfeld Gallery.
Over 400 years of painting, sculpture, works on
paper, textile art and photography were on view.
Most notable were the pieces by Wadsworth
Jarrell at the Jenkins Johnson Gallery. These
dazzling pieces of Black art especially the Vodo
Flags of Haiti were memorial.
Unfortunately, the public will have to wait till
next year as the Art Show is now over. However,
much of the work shown is at the galleries on
the Upper East Side as well as downtown.
