NST NEVER FORGETS:
20th Anniversary 9/11 Memorial Service
BY BUD BANK
North Shore Towers’ Knit and
Crochet Club was started
about 12 years ago. The
club members have made hundreds of
blankets, hats and scarves for several
charities, including Jacobi Hospital,
the Mothers and Babies program,
St. Mary’s Children’s Hospital and
the Veterans Administration of
Northport for whom they supply lap
blankets for wheelchairs.
The group meets every Thursday
downstairs in the large card room.
At present they have 25 members.
All materials are supplied by the club.
The club is in the process of setting up
classes to teach crochet and knitting.

looking for new members, so if you
are interested, call the club’s president,
Judi Ross, at 347-235-4509.
This is a wonderful club!

NST LIBRARY NEWS
BY ARLENE KELVIN
We are all pleased that our
library has reopened
and the committee has
worked hard to update the collection
after the long closure. A few
items newcomers should know:
• Please take only 2 books at a
time. We don't charge overdue fees
or fines, so don't worry.
• All our books are donated. We
don't have a budget. But please don't
donate more than a few at a time.
• We keep books on the shelves
for 10 years after the copyright date
(except for classics).
• We don't want cookbooks,
self-help books, medical or travel
books.
Our committee of a few volunteers
works hard to keep the library
neat and orderly. If you are interested
in joining our committee, we
welcome you. Please email me at
akelvin@nyc.rr.com. Thank you for
your interest.
Art Treasure Discovered in NST Arcade!
BY KAREN PERRY
It almost sounds like a fable. The
story goes like this: Tired of
painting alone in his apartment
and staining valuable rugs, a NST
resident searched for another venue.
He heard about an old art studio
which was rumored to have been
buried years ago behind the Library.
It was said to be broken down and
cluttered with everything from
French doors to old lawn furniture,
and the bathroom was described as
so unseemly you would not use it
for your pet.
In truth, this is not a fable at all.
Despite the discouraging description,
the resident’s efforts were
greatly rewarded. What is now
the Art Studio was really a space
converted from a failing private
venture. It was completely
refurbished
by Management
two years ago into
a praiseworthy
community amenity.
State-of-theart,
it is furnished
with everything
from beautiful new
easels and drafting
tables to lockers
and a sparkling
new bathroom.
Complete with
two sinks, one for
artist cleanliness
and the other a “slop sink” for
cleaning brushes and discarding
appropriate waste.
Residents immediately put the
studio into use. It won great praise
from our residents.
They described it as “a
dream environment,”
“a welcome oasis” and
“a home away from
home” where a feeling
of creative excitement
prevailed. The secret
was providing activities
for residents of
all levels of accomplishment.
Some were
learning to sketch for
the first time, while
others were more
accomplished.
With cruelty the
pandemic descended, freezing all
of us in our tracks. We lingered in
our homes for months, filled with
incomplete information and fear.
The passage of time has brought us
vaccinations and the pace of prior
life slowly returns. Unfortunately,
group activities have been slower to
return to their pre-pandemic paces.
VISIT THE ART STUDIO
However, we are confident that
interacting with other people
enriches our lives. Working with
vibrant colors in the Art Studio
can surely lift the spirits. In your
datebook, write “Visit the Art
Studio” in bold, prominent letters.
Come see this great space and its
rewarding activities for yourself.
When you see all the Art Studio
offers, we hope you will make it
“a home away from home.”
