The University Club: Back with a Bang!
BY IRENE FRANK
The “bang” was in the form
of popular lecturer John
Kenrick who came to NST
on July 29 to entertain and inform
the University Club--the Club’s first
in-person event since early 2020!
Mr. Kenrick has been delighting
audiences for years with his inimitable
style and flair, and his involvement
with all things Hollywood and
Broadway made him the perfect
person to deliver a talk entitled,
“From Berlin to Hollywood.”
The Jewish-German emigres to
Hollywood had a significant influence
on the film industry as actors,
directors and producers of iconic
films and set new standards for
excellence and innovation.
Mr. Kenrick not only speaks, he
takes on the roles and reproduces
the speech patterns of the actors
perfectly. With the lights low, I
watched him in the corner dancing,
singing and conducting along with
the actors on the screen. He can’t
help himself (I’m sure he doesn’t
even realize that he does it).
The witty and talented Mr.
Kenrick was invited to talk to the
University Club again on August
26 when he concentrated on the
films of Billy Wilder, a man who
approached topics of controversy
and hypocrisy with humor and
intelligence. Read about this fun
event in the next issue of the North
Shore Towers Courier.

Kenrick discussed such luminaries as Joe Pasternak, producer of
“Anchors Aweigh,” “Summer Stock,” “Love Me or Leave Me,” among
other classic films.
Kenrick’s historical perspective included the arson attack on Berlin’s
Reichstag (parliament) Building which paved the way for the rise of
the Nazi regime
"Promises" continued from previous page
PROMISE #2
I will now incorporate resistance
training into my bi-yearly
routine of keeping fit. Resistance
training is as important as cardio
workouts. Train yourself to resist
chocolate, pastries, fried foods,
beer and pizza…. (Eh!) (2)
PROMISE #3
I promise to admit when I’m
wrong. I’ll let you know when it
happens.
PROMISE #4
I promise to love my friends
until we are old. I know! I know!
Physically doesn’t count.
PROMISE #5
I promise to never get serious
with a man who has a laxative jingle
for his ringtone.
Ahead of everything else, what
I’ve reinforced about my thoughts
on the subject of promises is to
appreciate your friends and your
family and everyone you love and
show how much they mean to
you, and to quote the Bard Willy
Shakespeare, “To thine own self
be true.” (3)
