PLENTY OF PRAISE FOR N.S.T.’S KNIT AND CROCHET CLUB
BY KAREN PERRY
OPhotos by Julie Weissman n any given Thursday
night, you will find members
of the North Shore
Towers Knit and Crochet Club in
the large card room doing acts of
charity. Courier readers have been
told about the club's donations of
colorful blankets, hats and stuffed
animals to charitable organizations
in the greater New York area. To
continue this momentum, the Club
will always share its letters of praise
with our neighbors and friends.
With locations in New York City
and on Long Island, St. Mary's
Hospital for Children is "Where
big hearts help little patients." In a
recent thank you letter, the hospital
once again applauded the N.S.T.
club. The letter read, "We express
our immense gratitude to you for
your recent donation to St. Mary's
Kids! Your decision to donate
hand knitted blankets is greatly
North Shore Towers Cares For the Needy
appreciated and will assist us in
our ongoing efforts to bring joy and
good experiences to our patients."
The letter continues, "We hope
that you take great pride in your
donation to St. Mary's and feel
good in knowing that you have
played a significant role in helping
children with special needs achieve
a better quality of life."
As always, the Club appreciates
your labor, monetary contributions or
the donation of yarn and knitting needles.

Shore Towers Knit and Crochet Club

BY BEVERLY BORD
“It is better to give than to
receive.” “Do unto others as you
would have them do unto you.”
The Greek philosopher Aristotle
once surmised that the essence of
life is “to serve others and to do
good.” In 2013, the results of a study
from Carnegie Mellon on volunteerism
appeared in Harvard Health
Publishing, the media and publishing
division of Harvard Medical
School. The study concludes that
there is a growing body of evidence
to suggest that people who give
their time to others might also be
rewarded with better physical health
and a longer life span. People who
voluntarily give of themselves feel
more socially connected thus warding
off loneliness and depression
and perhaps even lowering blood
pressure. Want to live longer? It is
better to give than receive.
North Shore Towers Cares for
the Needy in partnership with
Commonpoint Queens, the merger
of Samuel Field Y and Central
Queens Y, is a means by which
North Shore Towers residents
voluntarily reach out and donate
essential daily items to the needy
in the community. Co-chairpersons
of North Shore Towers Cares for
the Needy, Arlene Greenwood
and I (also known as the “Brown
Bin Girls”), applaud North Shore
Towers residents for the donations
which continue to fill the brown
hamper-looking bins in the mailbox
room in each building.
The following is a list of items to
be collected in August, September
and October:
AUGUST: Donations of new
pencils, pens, notebooks and other
school supplies. Watch for great
markdowns of these items in local
stores.
SEPTEMBER: Donations of
GENTLY USED AND NEW
women’s clothing, shoes and
accessories.
OCTOBER: New cleaning supplies
(soaps, detergent, dishwasher
soap, sponges, wipes, towels,
napkins).
Items will be donated to the
Central Queens Food Pantry
in Forest Hills. For more
information about volunteer
programs at Commonpoint
Queens contact SSchachter@
