42 North Shore Towers Courier n September 2015 GAP COMMITTEE CHAIR AND BOARD MEMBER PHYLLIS GOLDSTEIN On Saturday, July 18, Cari Heiman, one of our expert trainers, conducted an orientation in the gym. The group learned about various pieces of equipment that are available and the correct way to use them. All equipment is good for strengthening; many target specific areas of the body. And of course, the aerobic section…treadmills, elliptical, and bikes, all help to increase your heart rate. The back of the gym houses free weights, additional strength training machines and, very important, stretching tables. Cari stressed that one should learn to use machines correctly and for your level of fitness. You can do this by working with a trainer from the GAP privately (for a fee) or going down to the gym and asking the desk person to show you how to set up a machine for your individual use. Cari also took the group to the spin room. There are 10 bikes, 9 for participants and 1 for the instructor. She explained that on a spin bike only the front wheel moves (the flywheel). The resistance can be controlled by the red knob while riding. The last area that was visited was the pilates reformer room. Here there are 4 machines for student use. The instructor directs the students while standing. Check the schedule for these two classes. The reformer, since the capacity is so limited, has to be registered for on Thursday at 5PM for the following week. The schedule delineates the times. Remember, working out is to help strengthen you, not hurt you. Know your limits (your body will tell you). Start out slowly and use light weights and resistance… work your way up… this takes time so don’t rush. Every time you work out you will feel more confident. Work on a level that you are comfortable with before moving to the next level. If you develop a schedule and follow it, you will be pleasantly surprised to see progress. All you need is a smile, sneakers, and determination… go for it! BY NORTH SHORE TOWERS TENNIS ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT LEO TUJAK The Ladies Tennis Doubles Club Championship tournament was held on Thursday, August 13th. Twelve women signed up with ten actually playing in the tournament, which NST pro Rick Bates set up. One doubles team got a buy on the first round. Both the matching of players and the scoring—first team to get 40 points, scoring 15, 30, 40—won the game. It was a hot but beautiful day, and a great day for tennis, but more so for the women who participated. This was a double elimination, round robin tournament. The first round matched all the double partners against their opponents and led to the elimination of the losing doubles teams. Winners played winners (3 teams), losers played losers (2) teams; then finalists—winners vs. losers—played each other. As play continued into the final round, it came down to the last match. We’re sure that everyone who participated had an enjoyable time and assume the winners even more so! Big thanks to all who entered and played. Now for the best part: the winners were Lynn Castoro and Helen Geisenberg; and the runners up were Norma Grill and June Stelboum. Tied for third place were Marion Levine and Shirley Wien, and Gerry Rubin and Julie Weissman. Congratulations to all! We’re happy to report that 9 of our new members this year are women. If you are interested in tennis or in joining for the coming season, please contact the country club front desk at 718.428.5030 or Leo Tujak at [email protected]. Looking forward to seeing you on the courts… THIS YEAR’S LADIES TENNIS DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIP WINNERS Photos by Julie Weissman (l. to r.) Asst.
