20 North Shore Towers Courier n September 2015 A THOUGHTFUL DECISION Congressman Steve Israel visits North Shore Towers BY FELICE HANNAH, BOARD MEMBER, POLITICAL ACTION CHAIRPERSON Congressman Steve Israel was welcomed by North Shore Towers and Board Presidents Mort Gitter on Tuesday, August 11, 2015. The overflowing audience listened intently as Congressman Israel shared his views regarding the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPA) referred to as the Iran Deal. “Wherever I go,” the Congressman, stated, “ people want to know my decision regarding the JCPA.” He continued that this is the most important Nat i o n a l d e c i s i o n that he has made as a Congressman. He said that he made a mistake voting to go into Iraq and pledged not to repeat it in making this critically important foreign policy decision on the Iran Deal. The Congressman stated that he read the JCPA in its entirety the same night that it was submitted for review. He also attended a Security meeting where he received more details regarding the JCPA. He concluded that this deal may not be in the best interest of Israel or the United States and that he would not support it. Congressman Israel shared three reasons why he could not support the JCPA. Iran will ‘cheat small’ in making small violations for which they will not be sanctioned and Iran will exploit ambiguities in the deal. Lifting the arms embargo will further threaten the security of Israel and increase missiles going from Gaza to Israel. After 15 years, Iran will be a Nuclear State. When asked by the President did the Congressman have an alternative he responded “No.” The Congressman stated that the absence of an alternative does not mean that he must accept this deal. Residents asked challenging questions of the Congressman. They asked why couldn’t Congress come up with a viable alternative, what happens if the deal collapsed. A resident pointed out that the United States has partners in this deal and cannot impose its will on these reluctant partners. Another resident stated that Iran should not have the right to trade capabilities and Israel has a right to defend itself. Questions were on other issues that included the need for Congress to have an oversight on the increasing costs of prescription drugs and the Trade Embargo deal. He agreed that the Federal Government should have the right to negotiate pricing for prescription drugs. A resident made a passionate plea for Congress to increase jobs.
