12 North Shore Towers Courier n September 2015 GOOD THINGS come in SMALL PACKAGES PACKAGESPACKAGES 3rd Annual SFF@NST presents THE BEST in SHORT FILMS BY STEPHEN VRATTOS North Shore Towers very own short film festival, appropriately named SFF@ NST, returns to the Towers Cinema for two evenings, September 29 and October 8. Founded three years ago by NST residents, actors Marilyn Chris and her husband Lee Wallace, the festival showcases the best in short films. The selection process encompasses the entire year. From the moment the previous year’s festival ends, Chris and the SFF@ NST’s panel of judges begin reviewing movies for the next year’s event. Along with Chris and husband Lee are Dr. Robert Eagle, Marilyn Eagle and Fred Chernow, who serves as both judge and Board liaison. Though only in its third year, the SFF@NST has already earned a great deal of respect in the industry. Whereas the process of getting submissions in prior years was more proactive, with the panel turning to family, friends and colleagues for films, positive word of mouth and cachet earned from two impressive showings has filmmakers now approaching the SFF@NST with their work. Fomenting a relationship with new Towers Cinema proprietors Henry and Anne Stampfel, whose LIIFE (Long Island International Film Expo) celebrated 18 years in 2015, was also instrumental in elevating SFF@NST. “We’ve never counted the number, but there have been lots of submissions,” Chris says. “They’re getting more numerous… and better every year as we become more known in the indie film community. And we look at every submission that comes in.” According to Chris, “quality” is the key criterion to a film’s selection to the festival. “That said, we look for stories that will resonate, possibly educate and even amuse our audience.” “We all seem to be on the same page,” Chris adds. “We screen a film, discuss it, and if there are objections from any one of us, we look at it again. If it still does not resonate—if there is one dissenter—we agree it is not for us. “It is a joyous endeavor for us all and we get such spectacular feedback that we hope to continue with the Short Film Festival at North Shore Towers for quite some time to come.” WHAT: 3rd Annual SFF@NST (Short Film Festival at North Shore Towers) WHEN: Tuesday, September 29 at 7:30 pm & Thursday, October 8 at 7:30 pm WHERE: Towers Cinema ADMISSION IS FREE Seating is limited and given on a first come, first serve basis
