BY PAUL NETTLER On July 9th, about 80 members and guests of the Men’s Club had the opportunity to learn about The Weizmann Institute of Science from Stuart Chizzik, the Institute’s Director of Development for the American Committee. Chizzik has spent the last five years leading the effort to raise both funds and public awareness within the New York Tri-State area for the Institute’s important work. An excellent and compelling speaker, Stuart spent nearly forty minutes speaking without notes, describing the Institute and its programs. He said he came to the Men’s Club meeting to develop friendships, not as a fund raiser. Consequently, there were no envelopes at the tables, only descriptive brochures. The Weizmann Institute is populated by 2700 scientists located on 280 acres with 90 buildings in Rehovot, Israel. It’s involved only in basic scientific research, leaving it to others to develop the fruits of that research for the benefit of all. Research is performed in many diverse fields, such as Alzheimer’s , brain cancer, robotics, archeology, plant science and astronomy, to name a few. Expertise in the various areas leads to a cross pollination of ideas. For instance, a professor in computer science and a professor in immunology are working together to develop personalized diets to counteract hyperglycemia. The faculty also works with leading research institutions all over the world, such as Rockefeller University and MIT. The Institute accepts only graduatelevel students. There are about 1000 enrolled and about half of them live on campus. Those who are admitted to the faculty are expected to spend their whole lives devoted to research at Weizmann. That’s dedication! Incidentally, I understand that even though Stuart’s presentation was not a fund raiser, several in the audience were quite generous. If you would like to learn more about the Weizmann Institute or have any questions, Stuart welcomes your call. His number is 212-895-7934. As is our custom, the membership meeting will start at 7:30 pm and guests will be welcome at 8:00. Ms. Frishberg has a gripping story to tell of her experiences evading capture during the war. Her family lived in Poland and she was only seven when the Germans invaded. After the war she wandered around Europe until she came to this country in 1947 and continued her elementary school education at the age of 15. She attended High School in Brooklyn and City College and eventually became a teacher. Currently, she volunteers as a gallery educator at The Jewish Heritage Museum and speaks about the Holocaust, convinced that when young people know the truth, they will make the necessary effort to build a better world. On June 24th, 25 club members, in a nostalgic state of mind, attended a Brooklyn Cyclones baseball game. After a most satisfying Italian dinner at Gargiulo’s, we walked across Surf Avenue to the ball park. Ebbets Field it isn’t, but the crowd was just as lively. It was like a 3-ring circus with the game itself, the Coney Island rides that could be seen behind center field and the crowd participation between innings. The Cyclones won in extra innings, but we didn’t stay that long. On June 29th, a busload of members and friends braved the Garden State Parkway to try their luck at Atlantic City. There were winners and there were losers, but I was told that the buffet was outstanding. No, they didn’t meet anyone from “Boardwalk Empire.” On an intellectual note, the first meeting of our newly formed Current Events group met on July 6th. It was attended by about 15 members and it was fascinating to observe how well versed many of our membership are on what’s going on in the world. A wide range of topics were touched upon including Greece and its possible effect on us, which segued into Puerto Rico’s financial problems. Obviously, politics were discussed, touching upon Hillary’s “scandals” and Bernie Sanders. DeBlasio vs. Cuomo was also mentioned. It was stimulating, but no punches were thrown. The next meeting is scheduled for Monday August 3rd at 10:30 in the Coleridge Lounge. If you have any questions, contact Lee Hiller at 347-502-7466. The initial meeting of the newly organized book club was held recently. It was decided that they would meet every six weeks, giving ample reading time. The first book that they will read and discuss is “Truman” by David McCullough. The next meeting will be on August 31st at 10:30 in the Coleridge Lounge. For more information, contact Ralph Edwards at 347-235-0472. August activities include our Men’s Club version of The Dating Game on Thursday August 6th at 7 pm in the large card room by the theatre; an Old Men Telling Jokes night on Thursday August 20th at 7 pm also in the large card room by the theatre (You can tell the same ones you told the last time; no one will remember); and a Texas Hold ’Em Tournament on Tuesday August 25th at 6:30 pm in the downstairs card room. And there are always our casual breakfasts on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in the VIP room at 9:15, and on Fridays in the restaurant.
