In The Pink North Shore Towers Courier n August 2015 13 The card players had their own raffle. Everyone received a ticket, with the option of purchasing additional chances. There was also a 50/50 drawing. “People said it was one of the best events of the year,” admitted Lev of the entire day’s activities. Prizes were presented at the luncheon in Towers on the Green. “The room was decorated beautifully,” commented Lev. “Buffy and Angelo did a great job—no complaints!” Money raised during “Babes & Guys” will be combined with moneys collected from related events, including the Tennis Association’s Annual Pot Luck for Cancer dinner (see story on page 14) the following week. Pouran and Linda Silver Designs also generously donated a percentage of all their sales the day of the event, which will be added to the final tally. The Tree of Life, on the wall to the right of the Country Club arcade entrance is another such source. Each season begins with the Tree sporting bare branches. As people contribute, a leaf is attached in someone’s name. By the day of the “Babes & Guys” event, the Tree was in full bloom, having already raised more than $2,000 and smashing last year’s take of $1,600. “Blossom Greenberg and Arlene Cammeyer oversaw the Tree,” said Lev. “They did an amazing job; we’re going to need a bigger tree, next year!” Lev noted that many donations are made from not only Country Club Golf and Tennis Associations members, but also North Shore Towers residents, their families and friends. “People have given $5 to $500,” revealed Lev. “Donations can be made through the end of September. Anyone wishing to give should make checks out to the ‘American Cancer Society’ and be sure to write ‘North Shore Towers’ in the memo line.” Contributions should be sealed in an envelope in Judy Lev’s name, and left at the front desk of Building #1. “My goal is to put North Shore Towers on the map as a community,” she continued in regards to the Co-op’s yearly cancer drive. “The Greens of Half Hollow in Melville, NY does it as a community and this year raised more than $100,000. What I want to do is make this our community event. I want to take it one step beyond every year.” The week following this year’s “Babes & Guys,” the tally stood at $32,000 gross, not including the Tennis Association’s event and the Tree of Life. Last year’s net reached $28,000, so Lev is confident 2015’s efforts will surpass 2014’s; quite impressive, considering the total raised the very first year was $1,000! As Chairperson, Lev oversaw Babes & Guys, but stresses that an event of this size could not possibly happen without the hard work and dedication of many individuals. Her Co-Chair, Ladies Golf Association President Teresa Oropallo, Bernie Weinstein and Gerry Rubin provided a great deal of help, as well as Country Club Manager Mary Anne Langone and her staff. “Without Mary Anne helping us, it wouldn’t have gotten done,” said Lev. “Mary Anne was fabulous! “This kind of effort from everyone made this a fantastic, successful event,” she continued. “I’m very pleased all the moving parts worked out. Everyone had a good time and it was a terrific!” Pink power! O R E F ...a good cause! (l. to r.)
