BY LEO TUJAK The Tennis Association held its annual Fourth of July tournament on Sunday, July 5th, at the tennis courts with a “Wimbledon” style theme. To that end, participants were directed to dress strictly in white, though a few “Agassis” bucked the directive. Matches were also set up as brackets, like a pro tournament, and strawberries and cream — courtesy of Mary Anne Langone and the Country Club — were served, as is the tradition at the annual English Grand Slam event. No word yet whether the Queen made an appearance. After nearly two hours of strenuous play, Barney Masnick and Fay Nadel emerged as the winners. Werner Nass, Joan Gleicher, Marc Eisenstein and Jack Schwarz were the Runners up. All were suitably rewarded with cans of tennis balls, so they can continue to play in future tournaments and games. The Tennis Association would like to thank the tennis staff—Rick and Jackie Bates, and Mel Schwartz—and country club staff—Cecilia Farfan and Mary Anne Langone—for all their assistance. Following the tournament, everyone gathered in Towers on the Green for a BBQ luncheon, which included hot dogs, hamburgers and veggie/turkey burgers, along with salads, followed by fruit, coffee/tea and muffins and cookies. The fifty attendees had good time. Our popular annual charity potluck dinner to benefit the American Cancer Society will be held in the VIP room on Thursday, July Tennis Association’s Independence Day Tournament & Luncheon was a Wimbledon-style affair 16th, at 6 pm. This event requires a minimum $25 contribution to the American Cancer Society and all attendees must provide a food dish, beverage or dessert, enough to serve at least 8 people. There is a sign up sheet on the tennis bulletin board for those that wish to participate. This yearly event not only brings together the tennis people, but also raises money for a worthy cause.
