The punch shot is a very valuable shot in golf. An abbreviated swing produces a crisp, low shot that you can control in different conditions: out of the rough, from below trees or on a windy day. HERE ARE YOUR KEYS: 1. Place ball in the back of stance. 2. Shift weight onto your front foot. 3. Choke down on the club. 4. Take a three-quarter backswing. Hint: It looks like the letter “L.” 5. Rotate off of your right side and finish low! LIBRARY RELAUNCHES Photo Courtesy of the Queens Library BY MELISSA CHAN Bayside bookworms reveled in the reopening of their new library on July 20 with balloon animals and face painting. The afternoon-long affair celebrated the completion of a $1.3 million project to renovate the Bayside branch of the Queens Library at 214-20 Northern Boulevard. The complete interior makeover, funded by city and borough leaders, now includes a new self-service check-out station, separate areas for adults, teens and children, full handicap accessibility, and bright new decor at the 10,300-square-foot public library, officials said. The branch closed late last December and reopened in June. BY MAGGIE HAYES Maria Termini-Miller joins the board as the new chair of both the Gym, Aerobic and Pool (GAP) committee, as well as the Publicity, Public Relations and Marketing committee. NST is a place Miller has “called home and met and got to know wonderful people,” and after dedicating years to various committees, she has taken the next step. Miller and her husband, Joseph, have been Towers residents for 14 years. Throughout those years, Miller has collaborated with other residents, board members and management to “enhance the community’s quality of life.” She has served on the House and Grounds committee, GAP committee, Long-Term Planning committee and the Pool and Aerobics sub-committees. The committee veteran said she was “instrumental” in decisions to prove trees for the golf course through Bette Midler’s Million Tree Program, add aerobics class to the schedule, enroll NST in a clothing donation program, facilitate the availability of MTA cards and implement the Go Green seminar. She was also one of the original proponents of golf sponsorship as a “creative solution” to increase membership. “This is not just my community,” she said. “This is our community; a community a truly care about and am proud to call home.” Outside of the Towers, Miller has experience as the associate commissioner for the city’s Department of Sanitation, where she manages government relations, community affairs, customer service and more, and she will take this experience with her to her Board service. “I meet with community leaders, public officials and civic and business organizations to discuss their concerns, assess the situation and provide solutions,” she said. “All skills that will benefit the NST board.” Throughout her professional career, Miller also collaborated with City Hall, the City Council and additional city agencies. She also developed and continues to administer the city’s Graffiti Removal program and is the co-chair of the Keep NYC Beautiful Coalition where she works on urban beautification projects. But in the Towers, her home, Miller said she cares and respects the views of her fellow residents. “When making decisions on the board, I will consider the impact on my fellow shareholders and the NST community,” she said.
