By now you must have seen the ever-present new Director of Security at North Shore Towers, Chris Stahly. He came on board in the middle of May and has made a positive impression on his staff and our residents. He seems to appear everywhere and at every event, his blue eyes scanning the venue while he chats with residents and mentors his staff. Born and raised in Nassau County, he worked his way up from patrolling the subway system to the highest commands in Wall Street and Midtown. Where did you go to school, Chris? I attended parochial school and graduated from MacArthur H. S. in Levittown in 1981. From there I went to Nassau Community College and currently I am finishing a Bachelor of Science Degree in Security Management from John Jay College-City University of New York. Do you have a family? Yes, I met my wife Elizabeth in 1990. She was a co-worker of a friend of mine. We live in Northport and have a son Aidan, who will be attending St. John’s University in the fall, and a daughter, Madeline, who will be going to the Elwood Middle School. Aidan is working as a lifeguard this summer to help pay his expenses. Our dog, Duke, a four-year-old boxer, rounds out the family. Growing up, I was one of five children; all my siblings were sisters. Were any of the members of your family police officers? No, I am the first one. My older sister became a Suffolk County Police Officer a year after I went into the Academy. My father was a pressman for the U. S. Government Printing Office and actually worked in Washington, coming home on weekends. As a kid I was influenced by TV shows like Dragnet and Mannix. I thought of police work as exciting and also as a noble profession. I joined in 1986 and was then assigned to the Transit Police. I patrolled an assigned subway station, answering calls ranging from robberies to quality-of-life issues and managing the homeless. Stahly with family on steps of St. Patrick’s Cathedral on St. Patrick’s Day 2012 What came next? Soon I was moved to the 23rd Precinct in East Harlem. There I patrolled both on foot and in a sector car. I responded to calls for service as directed by the communications dispatcher for both crimes and other conditions, such as shootings, robberies, missing children and motor vehicle accidents. After being promoted to my final three years on the force. Were you happy in retirement? family. I’ve always been an exercise enthusiast in the gym and I had more time for that. A few years ago, I studied Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and still practice that three times a week for an hour. Living near both the Dix Hills public golf course and the VA public course in Northport, I worked on my game. As an avid reader, I enjoyed William Caunitz’s books. He is also a retired NYPD Lieutenant and paints vivid pictures of police work. His New York Times bestsellers include “Black Sand” and “Suspects.” I’ve read most of his books. After a while I wanted to do something else and took the job of Supervisor of Security at the main branch of the New York Public Library. I was greeted by the pair of lions each morning. This is a huge complex that provides more than just books. There are rotating precious art exhibits, huge catered parties and hordes of tourists. I loved the challenges but not the commute. After three years, I heard about the opportunity at North Shore Towers and applied. I love coming to work here each day. How large is your Security Department? There are 40 security guards working around the clock, seven days a week. Each month, there are 100 ambulance cases and four Dead on Arrivals, on average. I think this is the safest, guard will become familiar the the residents’ habits. Also, the guards will be available in case of medical emergencies. I am currently researching a key tracking system. The Board has allocated a significant amount of money to upgrade the the co-op’s camera system and new lighting will be installed in the garage. What are some of your leisure activities? Elizabeth and I enjoy going to local beaches in the summer and try to get into Manhattan several times a year to take in a Broadway show. I also enjoy working in the yard on weekends. Next year, Elizabeth and I will celebrate our 25th Wedding Anniversary and are planning a trip to Ireland. 4 North Shore Towers Courier n July 2016 CHRIS STAHLY: From Subways to Jiu-Jitsu It was great spending more time with my floor from the penthouse to the arcade. Residents will recognize the guard and the Sergeant, I was assigned to Internal Affairs and then the Detective bureaus. While assigned to the Manhattan Special Victims Unit, I was promoted to Lieutenant and retained in Special Victims as the Commanding Officer. I was later promoted to Executive Officer of the Major Case Squad, focusing primarily on bank robberies and kidnappings. It was there that spent What are some of your goals for improving security at NST? largest residential community in the city. But there is always room for improvement. I’d like to bring security up to the next level by having a roving security guard in each building patrolling every Stahly with Commissioner Raymond Kelly at promotion to Detective Lieutenant ceremony
