Season Two Summer is heating up Wednesday, July 20th, in the downstairs Card Room at 7:30 p.m.—“Hail, Mikhail! An Evening with Mikhail Barishnikov,” presented by Marilyn Carminio, the wonderful speaker, who fascinated us with her enlightening talk on Downton Abbey in April. Ms. Carminio has worked with Helen Gurley Brown, Elle and New Woman magazines among others, and has lectured at more than 100 venues, including Hutton House at C.W. Post, Roslyn Historical Society, Meadowbrook Pointe and libraries throughout Long Island. She brings her expertise and professionalism to programs in high style. In recounting the story of Baryshnikov, she will span his boyhood from Soviet occupied Latvia to his journey to the West. Music and video clips will accompany the program. We look forward to a creative presentation and discussion, which is Ms. Carminio’s trademark. Don’t miss it! Gail Ritholz, Roberta Rosenblatt, Marion Kashunsky Roberta Gould introduces (l. to r.) Roz Chumsky, Eva Kessner, Judy Paris, Gloria Beck Barbara Goldstein A capacity crowd attended the NST Women’s Club program on Wednesday, June 15th. After welcoming remarks from program chairman Gloria Beck and President Bobby Gould, the exciting meeting began. Wrapping up the first year session, the speaker, Clinical Social Worker and NST resident, Barbara Goldstein, spoke with great poignancy of her visit to Anne Frank’s house as a young girl after reading “The Diary of Anne Frank.” Seeing an older gentleman walking through a door, she recognized him as Otto Frank, Anne’s father. She struck up a conversation with him that would span many decades, visits to his home in Basel, Switzerland, and frame her thinking to this very day. Ms. Goldstein’s personal account was mesmerizing. “I was born when the fires of Auschwitz sent up the stench of human flesh,” she declared. “War was a real presence in my childhood.” Recalling numerous meetings with Otto Frank through the years, Ms. Goldstein had a slide presentation depicting her many visits. This figure in history had a lasting impression in her life and resonated with great impact on the large assemblage of women present. It was a memorable program.
