Queens Courier Expo focuses on well being and financial wellness BY MAGGIE HAYES Queens residents were once again able to get the latest facts and tips for living a long, healthy life -- and for making sure their finances are in top shape -- at The Queens Courier’s Health and Financial Fitness Expo. “It’s very interesting,” said Manek Werdiger, a resident of the Towers, about the expo. “At my age, I look for things like this to make my life pleasant.” The expo, held Friday, May 17, brought together over 30 vendors and nearly 200 attendees. Keynote speaker Ronald Fatoullah, estate and elder law attorney, educated the audience on the five essential documents all seniors should have.“You need someone to manage your assets the way you want them to be managed,” Fatoullah said. The five documents included a will, powers of attorney gift writers, a health care proxy, a living will and a living trust. Cindy Roth, managing director of the Kornreich Technology Center at The Viscardi Center, spoke as well, specifically targeting safety in the home. Roth’s group also focuses on the reduction of isolationism through tactics such as teaching seniors how to use new mobile technology. “It really adds to the quality of life,” Roth said. “We’re able to provide them with knowledge and training so they won’t be isolated.” The center additionally provides assistance technology for activities such as cooking and essentially helps seniors stay at home as long as possible. “It’s very important for seniors to be able to maintain that,” Roth said. Victoria Hughes of Jzanus Home Care, Inc. came to the expo as a vendor. The home care group already services people in the Towers, but hopes to expand. “We really wanted to work with the Towers and penetrate in here a little more,” Hughes said. “We’re a pretty closeknit agency.” 30 North Shore Towers Courier n June 2013
