Speaker James Coll talks Constitution Full House
BY VICKI MAZEL
Photos by Dawn Steinberg On Wednesday, April 18, the NST Women’s
Club held their program on “The
Constitution: Understanding the 2nd
Amendment” with featured speaker Professor
James Coll of Hofstra and Nassau Community
College. Welcoming remarks were made by
Co-President Julie Weissman, followed by a listing
of future events by Gloria Beck and Rosalie
Goodman. The well-attended meeting payed
tribute to Coll’s engaging style and presentation.
Going back to the founding fathers, and citing
the need for people to have the right to bear
arms during different times in American history,
Coll spotlighted the reasoning of primary
author James Madison and Thomas Jefferson
among others. Quoting the amendment; “A
well regulated militia being necessary to the
security of the free state, the right of the people
to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”
From the amendment’s inception to the present,
Coll pointed out certain challenges which
have taken place, including the involvement
of the Supreme Court and “the rights of the
people.” Moving weapons across state lines
was discussed, child safety locks, and other
regulatory powers in play.
A lively discussion, generated by members
Judith Paris and Eva Kessner to name a few,
brought the evening to a rousing finish. Coll
will continue his lectures on The Constitution
Wednesday, June 20, and Wednesday, July 18,
in the downstairs card room. The innovative
mini-series was developed by program chairperson
Gloria Beck, and has been enthusiastically
received by Women’s Club members.
SAVE ME A SEAT!
The newly formed Cinema Club of the NST
Women’s Club has met with positive response,
continuing the series with “Seven Days at
Entebbe.” All reviews take place on designated
Monday mornings at the movie theater at 11
a.m. Viewers see the film on their own. A
notice of the review time is posted at the top
of the stairs leading down to the theater, and
notices will also be available in the mailrooms.
Kudos to Howard Simon, co-manager of the
theater for his cooperation and support. Key
to the success of the program, Howard also
provides some scenes for the current film up
for review. We thank committee members
Carol Klinger, Gloria Beck, Chickie Kaufman
and Mimi Radin for their continuing interest
and leadership. Film discussion is led by Vicki
Mazel, who provides background information
on the film and then opens it up for general
participation. Keep up to date with the series
by looking for the yellow rose at the theater
and in the mailrooms.
