6 North Shore Towers Courier n April 2014 MEN’S CLUB ATTRACTING MEMBERS BY VICTOR G. MIMONI Golf isn’t the only thing that’s in full swing at North Shore Towers, if you ask Gary Zwetchkenbaum, of the NST Men’s Club Events Committee. “We’re the largest club in the Towers, with 85 members at last count and more joining every month,” he says with pride and without prompting. To illustrate why the Mens’ Club is attracting so many new members, Zwetchkenbaum ticked off recent events: Despite a bitter cold February, the club met on Thursday, February 13 for an inspiring discussion with para-athlete and Towers resident Kevin Grant, an NST resident who came back from an injury that left him paralyzed from the waist down, to play wheelchair basketball for the “Rolling Knicks,” a league team sponsored by the NBA’s New York franchise. “Kevin discussed his journey from depression to returning to an active, rewarding life,” Zwetchkenbaum recalled, adding, “He’s really impressive.” The following Monday, February 17, members and guests braved freezing temperatures to attend a live concert by five-time Grammy award winner Michael Bolton at the Queensborough Performing Arts Center. “Bolton gave a dynamite performance to over 900 people in attendance,” Zwetchkenbaum noted. On Wednesday February 26, he noted that 31 members and guests enjoyed a festive dinner at Portuguese/Brazilian barbeque palace Churrasquiera Brasa Rodizio in Mineola, where a great time was had by all.    March has also featured an active schedule. The monthly meeting on Thursday, March 13 featured Dr. Stanley Goldsmith, an expert in Nuclear Medicine and Tower One resident. The good doctor gave a fascinating presentation on how nuclear Medicine is used to diagnose cancer and coronary heart disease. “It was like the room was a medical lecture hall,” Zwetchkenbaum marveled, “He answered questions regarding several members’ personal medical experiences.” Wednesday, March 26 witnessed another great night out with roughly three dozen members, spouses and guests enjoying a dinner and dancing at the Deer Creek Golf Club in Deerfield Beach, Florida. “This was our last dinner in sunny Florida for the season,” said Men’s Club President Al Fuchs, from the warmth of the Sunshine State. Coming up in April, the club is offering orchestra reserved seats at $32 – a 20 percent discount – to see Manhattan Transfer at Queensborough Performing Arts Center. One of the most popular jazz vocal groups of the late 20th century, Manhattan Transfer has won 10 coveted Grammy Awards in the Jazz & Pop categories.    Due to a scheduling conflict, Zwetchkenbaum noted that the monthly meeting will be on April Men’s Club officers share a moment with Tower 1 resident and nuclear medicine expert Dr. Stanley Goldsmith.
