Around the
Towers Doctors
BY BUD BANK
I was scheduled to have my
def ibri l lator pacemaker
replaced on a Monday. The
battery was six years old. Pace-makers
usually last about five
years.
Unfortunately, life had differ-ent
things in mind for me. The
Saturday prior to my procedure I
woke up to a trigeminal neuralgia
attack, which is an excruciating
pain in the face that is called a
suicide pain. My children came
to help, but it was unmanage-able.
Nothing they did helped.
On Monday morning I was taken
by ambulance to one of our local
hospitals.
Unfortunately for me, they
had no clue what to do. They
gave me 10 pills a day, they shot
me with everything they had,
my arms were black and blue.
I then started hallucinating. I
saw a man and woman looking
at me--I thought I was being kid-napped.
I asked them what they
wanted. They told me I was in a
hospital; I did not believe them.
I told them to take me outside
because I want to see where it
says “Hospital.” The next thing
I could remember, I was trans-ferred
to a rehabilitation facility.
At the facility I tried to get out
of bed. I couldn’t believe how
weak I was. I could not move
even my little toe. I really thought
I was going to die, and I began
thinking about the people in
heaven I was going to see again.
Miraculously, they got me out
of bed and were able to get me
to move. I had two great ther-apists.
One worked with me in
the morning and had me work
on my upper body strength and
another in the afternoon who
worked on my lower body. These
people were wonderful. I pro-gressed
from a wheelchair to a
walker to a cane. Presently, in my
apartment I am walking without
the cane.
Even though I’m now home,
I’m not done. I just had the
pacemaker replaced. New pace-maker,
new hospital, new doctor.
Wonderful hospital, wonderful
doctor, wonderful staff. And it’s
not over. Now I have follow up
office visits to the doctors. I can’t
wait for that to end.
I just took an electroencepha-logram,
which is a study of brain
wave activity. My neurologist
said they gave me every scan
they could for my brain and
everything looks fine but they
do not have a cure for trigeminal
neuralgia, just medication. Will
have to take the medication, it
makes me lightheaded and dizzy,
but I guess it could be worse.
At least my cardiologist said I
could go back to normal. I asked
him how long the pacemaker
lasts, he said seven years. I asked
him who is going to live longer,
me or the pacemaker. He didn’t
answer me.
All I can say is forget about the
little stuff and enjoy today! Hope
to see you all in the arcade. Have
a great day. ~ Bud
