UPSTANDERS LEARN
HOW TO USE GENDER NEUTRAL PRONOUNS
BY JUDITH SCHWAGER
Dr. Amy Bracksmajer, Associate Professor
of Sociology at SUNY Geneseo, was our
January guest speaker, where she explained
gender identity; that is, the way you feel you
are, no matter the gender assigned to you
at birth. She added that there is a spectrum
of identity, from “CIS gender” (feeling the
gender you were assigned at birth is correct)
to “non-binary” (the feeling that you are not
one gender or the other).
She answered our many questions with
ease, attention and a deep knowledge of the
subject. What's more, she was able to clar-ify
much of our confusion about using the
pronouns requested, e.g., "they" and "them,"
explaining that it is an important sign of
respect for those who often feel marginal-ized.
"You don't have to fully understand
gender neutral pronouns to use them," she
stressed, “but when you do, you show your
care and your love."
This educational event was one of our
most interesting and most enthusiastically
received. Thanks to Dr. Bracksmajer for
making us smarter.
If you’d like to learn more about this
timely subject, NPR has an informative
article. Visit npr.org and search for “gender
pronouns.” You will see their article, “A
Guide to Gender Identity Terms.”

CELEBRATING BLACK
HISTORY MONTH WITH
"THE DIVINE NINE"
Denise Leary, a
35-year member of
Zeta Phi Beta Sorority
Incorporated, part
of the historically
Black Sororities and
Fraternities known as
the "Divine Nine," will
share its story with us
on Thursday, February
17, at 4 pm.
Founded in 1920 on the campus of
Howard University, these organizations were
established with core values and a shared
common goal to educate and uplift the Black
Community from racial inequities.
Denise has served as Treasurer and
President of her Chapter and as past
New York State Action Director for
Zeta and has increased its involvement
in the annual Black and Latino Caucus
in Albany, NY. Her membership in Zeta
has enabled her to travel to Ghana, West
Africa, as well as fundraise, volunteer and
give back to families in need. She teaches
Social Studies from various points of view.
In addition, she has developed history
workshops for schools, churches, youth
groups, civic associations, legislators and
libraries.
A graduate of Syracuse University, Denise
holds a Master's Degree in Elementary
Education with a concentration in Science
from CUNY Lehman College and an
Administrator's Degree from The College
of Saint Rose.
We look forward to Denise sharing her
knowledge of the Divine Nine and how their
history has shaped the social structure of our
communities and effected change through-out
our country's history.
COMING IN MARCH
Commonpoint Queens and NST Upstanders Join
Forces Again
In cooperation with Commonpoint Queens, the
Upstanders will be holding a drive on March 10 to support abused and homeless men,
women and families who are in dire need of basic toiletry essentials. Please see the flyer
on Page 19 for information about this important upcoming initiative.
Our work with Commonpoint in the past included a women’s shelter drive last April
which, due to the generosity of NST residents, was extremely successful and deeply
appreciated by the folks at Commonpoint.
Thank you in advance for your continued support!
