When they tell you that nothing can be
done, that just means that they do not know
what to do. My clients are people who may be
challenged in some way or whose life is just
not what they thought it would be. Now more
than ever, many of us fall into this category.
I hope you have enjoyed these articles about
people who have started over later in life. I
thought it might be time for me to tell you
my story. All my childhood, I wanted to be on
Broadway. I even attended college as a theater

arts major. But then life had other plans for me. My father passed
when he was only 52, so I went to work for our local dentist instead. I
always say that doctors have been very good to me, offering me many
opportunities to improve myself. I moved on to a health insurance
company and then became a practice management consultant,
eventually becoming a nationally recognized health reform policy expert.
In 2001, my mother passed, I turned 50, the office I was working
on was blown up in the World Trade Center and I decided it was time
for a change. I moved to Florida and became a volunteer for Medicare,
learning and speaking to seniors. During my time there, people started
asking me if I could help them to find doctors and do other things like
writing checks for people who had poor eyesight. GetHealthHelp was
born and I returned to New York to take on private clients. I became
a Board-Certified Patient Advocate in 2018, also sitting on several of
the committees that developed the credentials for the first certification
program for Private Professional Patient Advocates.
I do not have any preconceived ideas about what you need.
My approach is to look into the essence of the person over an
assessment period, in which we talk about who you truly are. I want
to know what you’ve done so far about the problem and what you
hope to get out of our time together. Choosing a patient advocate is
a very personal decision. I limit the number of clients I work with to
those who are serious about improving their life and who have the
means to follow through on the plans we make.
My allegiance, advice, and assistance are focused solely on the
wants and needs of my clients. I am not an employee of any hospital,
insurance company, doctor, nurse, or social worker. Instead, I know
how to listen to what the doctor, lawyer, or financial person is really
saying. I can help you to comply with treatment plans or to find
alternatives. I understand that the best way for you to feel comfortable
about your situation is to have clearly defined plans and timelines. We
will work closely together to personalize your experience.
