FROM THE PUBLISHER
Are you bowled over by our beautiful pink cover recognizing Breast Cancer Awareness
Month? I hope not, but I do hope you stop and read the pages that give you information
that can save your life — both men and women.
I myself was getting my annual checkup when the doctor said, “I don’t like when I feel
here. Let’s go upstairs and get you a mammogram right away!” I did and within a week,
I was at the office of renowned breast surgeon Dr. Karen Kostroff being tested for
breast cancer. I was lucky after surgery. They told me I did have Stage 1 breast cancer,
but only radiation was necessary and a daily pill.
I tremble when I think what might have happened had I not had that annual checkup.
My story would be very different. I urge everyone to be checked annually — and yes, even
men have breast cancer. Our writers have valuable information for you, so read it and take
action right away!
In 1985, with the sad passing of my 17-year-old daughter Lara, I was overwhelmed and devastated by the loss. I didn’t
know how to begin to cope with it. The need to make funeral arrangements had me walking in unknown territory.
I got through it, but decided to create help for others to ease the pain by creating information about coping with death.
Here it is. Please send me your experiences to vschneps@longislandpress.com and share what helped you get through a
painful time in your life.
On the lighter side of things, this month we also bring you our chat with Merrick natives Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield,
the entrepreneurs behind the dynamic Ben & Jerry’s ice cream brand. We
round up the Island’s spookiest haunted houses to visit before Halloween. And
our reporters pound the pavement in downtown Oyster Bay in advance of the
35th annual Oyster Fest — one of Long Island’s largest annual events.
There’s much more to read about in this issue as well. Make sure you don’t
miss a thing by liking us on Facebook, following us on Twitter and Instagram,
and subscribing to our weekly Friday Refresher newsletter rounding up the
latest from the updated-daily longislandpress.com
See you at Oyster Fest!
