It feels strange to say this considering I remember celebrating New Years in 2014 so vividly. Many of you are frantically searching for last minute holiday gifts and thinking about what to cook for family dinners. This is the time of year to reflect on New Year’s resolutions and spend time with family and friends who we haven’t seen as much as we would like. It’s also time to check out LIC Courier and some of the great things going on in several western Queens communities. This issue is filled with photos of four-legged friends of Gantry Park. Each pup has a distinct personality and photographer Dennis Martinez loves to capture each personality through his photographs. Another artist who has been making her mark on Long Island City since 1980 is Sharon Florin, who recently began to create commemorative quilts for family and friends. Read about her foray into the quilting world after a long and successful painting career. An Astoria cab driver was commemorated in the 2016 NYC Taxi Drivers Calendar and shares his experience hamming it up for the cameras. This issue also features an Astoria resident who showcases the talented musicians living in her neighborhood through a series of YouTube videos. Lastly, we feature the story of Lindsey Mayberry, an Astoria woman who was compelled to travel to Greece to help guide refugees looking to escape their war-torn countries and start a better life. Though Mayberry volunteered at the refugee camp for four days, she has incredible stories about people’s long and arduous journeys and some of the bright spots along the way. As always, the magazine is packed with fun events happening in Long Island City and Astoria and the latest updates on the real estate market. I hope you all have a happy and eventful holiday month and new year!
