For this marvelous summer issue we would like to welcome back our friend and LIC Courier writer Alan Capper, whose story on Astoria artist Gildo fills our front cover this month with color. Great to have you back! Take a look inside and get to know Gildo, who spent his years as a successful photographer, mingling with and photographing the glitterati, including the legendary Andy Warhol. Gildo has even used some of Warhol’s techniques to create one-of-a-kind pieces. Don’t miss out on getting to know this unique artist. In this issue we are excited to announce the opening of the brand new outdoor café, LIC Landing by COFFEED, at Hunter’s Point South Park, which brings local ingredients and yummy treats to the beautiful Long Island City waterfront. What could be better than enjoying a meal while gazing at the Manhattan skyline? This month we also look forward to the first Astoria Tour de Bar which will take participants around Astoria on the first day of summer to experience all the fine bars and restaurants in the community. A portion of the proceeds from the event go towards the nonprofit Childhood Cancer Society. So go out and have a drink – all for a good cause! And, we celebrate the groundbreaking on the reconstruction of a Sunnyside park which will honor local veterans, remember the life of former Councilman Walter McCaffrey during a street renaming, and welcome a brand new giant ice cream factory in Astoria. So many celebrations! Take a look at all the delicious photographs from both the Taste of Sunnyside and Taste of LIC, which highlighted what each western Queens neighborhood has to offer. As the summer rolls in don’t forget to check out both the LIC Flea & Food, located Saturdays at the outdoor lot at Fifth Street and 46th Avenue, and the Astoria Flea & Food at Kaufman Astoria Studios on Sundays. Make sure to make both those popular flea markets your next weekend destination. With the cold weather far behind us there are no longer any excuses to stay home, so get out and enjoy what Long Island City, Astoria and Sunnyside have to offer. Don’t forget to keep sending us your feedback and ideas. Have a happy Fourth of July and a great start to your summer!
