health The weather is finally getting hot and the last thing you want to do is be stuck over an oven making yourself a healthy meal—enter my love for smoothies. I joke that sometimes in the summer I go on an accidental smoothie-only diet, mainly from total lack of desire to put anything hot into my body when the temperature gets above 80 degrees in the city. Smoothies can be a great way of getting in a lot of great nutrients and fiber, and feeling full without feeling uncomfortably stuffed. They can also be a wonderfully refreshing meal for the sweltering days ahead. Unfortunately, it is very easy to make something perfectly healthy and nourishing into a sugar bomb, so I wanted to arm you with some of my favorite go-to smoothie recipes for the summer. There’s plenty more on GoSweetandSkinny. com but these are the few I tend to blend over and over again. Too often people tend to make smoothies a fruit overload and they can turn into something that should be considered along the lines of dessert, instead of a nutritious meal substitute or post-work out replenisher. It’s okay to put fruit in your smoothie but balance it out with greens and “good for you” fats and proteins. Don’t be scared of the kale or veggies in these smoothies, I promise once they’re blended with everything else, you can hardly tell they’re even there. Smoothies can be an incredible way to sneak in extra veggies into your morning as well as try out adding some super foods into your diet like flax seed, chia seeds, maca powder and more. I have a soft spot for them because they allow for such creative exploration. When I make my vegan, gluten-free cupcakes, one false measurement can lead to disaster, but with a smoothie, almost anything goes. So have fun exploring smoothies this summer, use these recipes as your starting point and then start having fun and switching it up!
