Photos by Tony Vaccaro honored TONY VACCARO LIC D-Day veteran & photographer joins D-Day celebrations in Normandy BY ALAN CAPPER Tony Vaccaro, a veteran of D-Day and photographer, traveled Photo by Troy Benson for the D-Day Commemorations in Normandy to be present on June 6, the actual date of the landings which cost over 3,000 American lives. Although there were a large number of American veterans present Mr. Vaccaro has a special place in the commemorations because an exhibition of his war photography is the centerpiece in the Museum of The Invasion in Caen, Normandy. He spent time with President Barack Obama and President François Hollande of France and was honored by his contributions to the commemorations. After the D-Day commemorations his exhibition will tour other French cities and Mr. Vaccaro is already the subject of a film made for French television. Mr Vaccaro said: “I’m honored to have been invited to this event and it provides me with the opportunity to remember my fellow American soldiers who did not return from these savage battles.” After the D-Day landings Mr. Vaccaro took part in the major battles which took him and his brother soldiers from Northern France to the fall of Berlin, carrying his camera and taking what would become award-winning photographs.
