FROM THE EDITOR
During the shortest month of the year we at
LIC Courier Magazine have a magazine that is
jam-packed with the latest in western Queens.
One of Astoria’s favorite brunch spots, Queens
Comfort, announced its closure in January. But as
we reported, owners said the restaurant would
move to a new location two blocks away.
We paid a visit to the Queensboro Bridge, where
the city is running its compost program. Hundreds
of thousands of pounds of food scraps are pro-cessed
and composted underneath the bridge
every year and the service is being rolled out to
Long Island City and Astoria homes this year.
In this issue, we sit down with Giancarlo Coco,
the owner of a new Italian restaurant in Long
Island City. Piatto serves authentic Italian dishes
at 1-50 50th Ave.
Straus Paint & Hardware Co. has been serving
Astoria residents since 1930. Cliff Straus took over
from his father, Gary, and we talk about how the
hardware store has been able to thrive for so long.
Kris Graves, a Queens native, has been taking
pictures of Long Island City for more than 10
years and has been able to capture the neigh-borhood’s
transformation. Now, he’s compiling
his photos into a book series titled “Lost.” Graves
runs a publishing company out of his home and
in addition to his book, has partnered with nine
other photographers and tasked them with taking
photos of their respective cities.
The series of 10 books highlights cities including
Beijing, Berlin, Boston, Chicago, Kolkata, Manhat-tan,
Omaha, San Francisco and Seattle.
As always, we feature the latest in real estate,
community news and events and art exhibits oc-curring
in western Queens.
