Borough’s coolest business, Bronx Native, turns two
BY ALEX MITCHELL
One of the borough’s coolest
businesses turned twoyears
old this October. Bronx
Native, a clothing and apparel
brand that shows true homage
to the borough in ways that
others simply don’t began as a
pop-up shop in 2017.
Since then, owner Amaurys
Grullon developed his
brand into an icon that’s recognized
throughout New York
City, opening two brick and
mortar locations at 127 Lincoln
Avenue in Mott Haven
and 866 Hunts Point Avenue
in Hunts Point in the process.
Besides the iconic ‘El
Bronx’ shirts and other notable
apparel that celebrities
like Fat Joe and others have
worn, Bronx Native sets a
trend in bringing clothing
and culture under one roof.
“It has been our goal to become
a community place for
the Bronx while showing off
the best of the borough to outsiders,”
Grullon said.
He said the Bronx native
mission is doing so in a way to
promote what beauty, creativity,
and style lies in the Bronx
that’s been overlooked for far
too long.
A major part of the brand
is promoting Bronx literacy,
as the shops sell books by local
authors and also novels
about Latino culture.
That’s why Grullon decided
to open up his Hunts
Point shop, shifting the focus
more towards culture than
just clothes. “
We thought, what’s a better
way to do that then bring
in more of the Bronx and give
a space to such a creative community,”
he continued.
Whether it is open mic
nights for poetry or block parties
with live DJs, Bronx Native
has successfully become
noteworthy for more than just
outterwear.
The brand has also been
featured on the Viceland
show, ‘Hustle’ which was executively
Keys.
As far as authenticity goes,
the show’s host John Henry
had nothing but love for the
crew at Bronx Native.
As a matter of fact, it was
one of his favorite episodes to
shoot.
“Those guys are the real
