wooden and silver cross hangs above her
alter for her mother: “My mother does not
like my masks,” Almazan said. “She really
doesn't like them, so she made me promise
that I would always hang a cross.”
Even the large crystal lamp by the couch
is a fond memory – she stole it with her
mom from an antique shop whose owner
owed them money.
With so much history surrounding her,
Almazan is comfortable and content in
Astoria, even if it’s not the be-all-end-all
for her.
“Astoria kind of protected me,” she
said. “When I first moved here it was the
most diverse place in the world. But I still
don’t know if New York is my home.”
But wherever she goes next, she’ll collect
more objects and memories to fill her
new home.
