22 | BOROMAG.COM | NOVEMBER 2014 SHOPS While there exists a devastatingly limited pocketful of boutiques catering to style and fashion in Western Queens, the recent opening of “The Brass Owl is a welcome artistic alternative to the mall experience,” explains the store’s award-winning stylist, Nicole Panettieri. Her quaint storefront on the ever-growing thoroughfare of Ditmars Boulevard has only been open a few weeks, and yet it has quickly become a place for locals to mingle and hangout—due in part to Friday happy hour from 5 to 9 p.m., when patrons are offered complimentary wine while they shop. We took advantage and grabbed glass last Friday, and begged the owner to dish a little more on everything from the Little Black Dress to pumps, tassels, even Audrey Hepburn. BORO: How did the name come about? Nicole Panettieri: I’ve always liked owls, and I wanted a vintage yet feminine name.  My boyfriend designed my logo, and it was exactly what I had envisioned for my store. BORO: Of which fashion trends should the residents of Western Queens be aware? NP: For the autumn, ankle booties are my favorite.  They look great with a pair of skinny jeans, leggings, or a skirt.  Not only are they versatile to wear, but they really suit the lifestyle of the NYC commuter, which is a total bonus. BORO: Can you tell us about one favorite designer of yours, and why you are drawn to their work? NP: Lately, I’m loving Derek Lam.  He has a feminine, relatable look with a retro edge.  On top of his ready-to-wear line, he has amazing shoes that are innovative, yet wearable.  His shoes have been copied by a lot of the mainstream designers.  At The Brass Owl, my favorite brand is Dolce Vita.  They make a quality shoe that is thoughtfully designed. BORO: Tell us about three ‘musthave’ items currently available at the Brass Owl. NP: The 3 must have items are: 1) The bootie, as I mentioned Nicole Panettieri before.  I have styles that range from casual to dressy.  Some have a western flair, some have a motorcycle flair, and some are just simple and perfect! 2) Tassel necklaces.  I love this look—it’s a necklace that channels The Great Gatsby but looks great with any outfit.  I have several
